Mental telepathy, Marxism, and the midwife toad: Arthur Koestler's demons

Arthur Koestler was by all accounts an odd duck. He was certainly brilliant, but his entire career is marked by his internal contradictions. Was he a man of the Enlightenment, or the opposite? He was certainly a contrarian. A Marxist turned anti-Communist (see "Darkness at Noon"), he nonetheless harbored a sympathy for the Marxist neo-Lamarckian biologist Paul Kammerer (and by implication, for the Michurin-Lysenko school of Soviet "genetics") and could not shake his own deep-seated distaste for the idea of randomness in biology. Thus "the Case of the Midwife Toad," as well as "The Ghost in the Machine"--and this long out-of-print book on parapsychology. Again, Kammerer is involved, having in 1919 published "Das Gesetz der Serie" ("The Law of Seriality [Coincidence]"), which has never been translated into English but can be downloaded in toto as a pdf, if you read German. Kammerer was convinced that there is no such thing as random coincidence; such occurrences must be manifestations of a general law of the universe. Koestler was just as sympathetic to this idea as to Kammerer's ideas in genetics and evolution. As a review of studies of and scientific hypotheses to explain ESP, this book is decades out of date, but still very provocative--and the fact is that we are not really any closer to understanding "paranormal phenomena" now than we were when it was written. Yes, there has been a great deal of fakery and a lot of sloppy work, and exposing both is the stock-in-trade of the journals "Skeptic" and "Skeptical Inquirer," which I read religiously but cannot take as the last word. The last word has yet to be written. Koestler really wanted there to be a ghost in the machine. The last paragraph of this book ends with his longing that there be a Universal Mind--"a mind which is more than a mathematical computer and more than some vast automatic nervous system animating all that exists, as efficient and as unconscious of self as healthy digestion." It is telling that his last words in this book are an expression of his longing.

Definitely not smeg.

Red Dwarf had me look this up, not thinking it was even a real publication. Much to my delight: it exists - and it's excellent. Absolutely makes you think what is possible. Even the most hardened skeptic will find some topics quite intriguing. Great read!
