Beginning with a short story appearing in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction in 1978, the publication of Stephen King's epic work of fantasy-what he considers to be a single long novel and his magnum opus-has spanned a quarter of a century.
Set in a world of extraordinary circumstances, filled with stunning visual imagery and unforgettable characters, The Dark Tower series is King's most visionary feat of storytelling, a magical mix of science fiction, fantasy, and horror that may well be his crowning achievement. In November 2003, the fifth installment, Wolves of the Calla, will be published under the imprint of Donald M. Grant, with distribution and major promotion provided by Scribner. Song of Susannah, Book VI, and The Dark Tower, Book VII, will follow under the same arrangement in 2004. With these last three volumes finally on the horizon, readers-countless King readers who have yet to delve into The Dark Tower and a multitude of new and old fantasy fans-can now look forward to reading the series straight through to its stunning conclusion. Viking's elegant reissue of the first four books ensures that for the first time The Dark Tower will be widely available in hardcover editions for this eager readership.

From Publishers Weekly
Elaborating at great length on Robert Browning's cryptic narrative poem "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came," the second volume of King's post-Armageddon epic fantasy presents the equally enigmatic quest of Roland, the world's last gunslinger, who moves through an apocalyptic wasteland toward the Dark Tower, "the linchpin that holds all of existence together." Although these minor but revealing books (which King began while still in college) are full of such adolescent portentousness, this is livelier than the first. Roland enters three lives in the alternate world of New York City: junkie and drug runner Eddie Dean, schizophrenic heiress Odetta Holmes and serial murder Jack Mort. If King tells us too little about Roland, he gives us too much about these misfits who are variously healed or punished exactly as expected. Typically, King is much better at the minutiae and sensations of a specific physical world, and several such bravura sequences (from an attack by mutant lobsters to a gun store robbery) are standouts amid the characteristic headlong storytelling. BOMC alternate.

Better than the first
By KT
I was determined to get through book one and man it took a lot of patience. This book however reads much faster than the first. For the most part, this volume is an exciting and engaging read. However, for some reason I became very annoyed with the way one of the characters spoke and found myself skimming her lines because they literally gave me a headache. I have read a lot of reviews that say the first book is awful, the second book much better, and the third book better than the two previous. While I somewhat enjoyed it, I believe this will be the end of Roland for me. Just not enough interest for now to keep going (and spending money on each volume). Maybe I'll come back to it sometime in the future but it just doesn't have me hooked.

One of Stephen King's best
By B. Christensen
The Drawing of the Three really picks up the pace after the Gunslinger. While the book starts within a few hours of the end of the previous book, you can tell in just the first few pages that this one is going to be different. The tone is much less surreal and disorienting than The Gunslinger, it's much easier to grasp what's going on and feel more involved with the story. There's a significant course correction right away and then the book gets into the interconnectedness of worlds that is probably my favorite theme of the series.
I think the best part about this book is the establishment of some amazing characters. We get a better sense of Roland's personality as he interacts with new people and faces some challenges he can't just solve with his guns. Eddie Dean is possibly my favorite Stephen King protagonist, he's a great multi-faceted character who is genuinely likable and interesting to read. His journey in this book is just fantastic. Odetta's story is fascinating and totally unique. Reading this book a second time I was so happy to re-meet some of my favorite characters and know this is just the beginning of their story.
This book has many memorable moments that stand out in the series. The Dark Tower as a whole is Stephen King's greatest work, but this book stands up against some of his other classics on its own. It will leave you wanting more and the best part is that the 3rd book is just as good as the 2nd.

Book 2 of my favorite series
By Jeannie N
The Drawing of the Three is the second book of the epic Stephen King saga, The Dark Tower. This is the book that truly captivated me and pulled me into the world of Roland the Gunslinger. The first book follows Roland across the desert, chasing the man in black. This book expands upon that universe in very unexpected ways as Roland "draws the three" that were mentioned at the end of book one.
I highly recommend The Dark Tower series. If you read the first book, and you're undecided about continuing the series, please consider getting the second book anyways. It's an amazing series and the first book doesn't do it complete justice. This book really starts the series off properly.
