Two good stories and one so-so one and one really awful one
By Amazon Customer
I bought this book for the Jo Beverley story, having read all the books in her Malloren series. I'd never heard o the other three authors, but I was willing to give them a try.

I have to say that I was a bit disappointed by the first story, Jo Beverley's "Forbidden Affection." The premise was interesting enough: young heroine is addicted to Gothic novels, particularly those written by a specific author. Heroine's family comes to London for her older sister's Season and learns that:1 - they have rented the late author's town house, 2 - the author was murdered in the house next door, and 3 - the owner of the house, suspected of the murder, has been abroad for 10 years. The heroine finds a secret passageway connecting the two homes, and the story takes off. I like Beverly's writing style and did like the heroine, but I could not get over the fact that the girl was 16 and the hero was 30. It just seemed bizzare to me. And a bit icky. My grade: C+

"The Pleasure of a Younger Lover" by Vanessa Kelly was a pleasant surprise. Like the first story, there is an age difference between the hero and heroine, but she is 32 and he is 28, so it was a bit more believable. The hero has loved the heroine for years, having grown up in a neighboring estate. But has to overcome her insecurities and self-doubt, plus help her clear her late husband's name, before he can win her. I liked Kelly's writing style, and I found both characters to be very believable and quite likeable. I'd like to read more of her work. My grade: A

"The Naked Prince" by Sally MacKenzie was a surprise. I didn't think I'd like it, since the language and actions didn't seem authentic to the time period (Regency, although it isn't specified). But the story of how the two lead characters end up working together to prevent the hero's friend from a disasterous marriage, added to the very obvious intellectual compatiblity between the hero and heroine made this an enjoyable read. I think MacKenzie stretched the bounds of believabilty by having her prudish spinster stick around for an entire orgy weekend, but I was willing to suspend disbelief. My grade: B

The same cannot be said for the final story in the anthology, "A Summer Love Affair" by Kaitlin O'Riley. This is the classic example of someone writing a 20th Century story set in the 19th Century. Remember, the 1880s were a time where Victorian women were so modest that they covered up the legs of their pianos, for goodness sake. Yet in O'Riley's interpretation of this era, within 24 hours of meeting the hunky, half-dressed British hero during her visit to Spain, the sheltered English ingenue finds herself posing virtually nude with him for a painting. That ridiculous scene, combined with a very stilted writing style, made this story virtually unreadable for me. My grade: D-

I read all of Jo Beverley's books and this one was no exception. I love romance novels even though sometimes they write almost the same kinds of books but then how many times can you the same kind of books over and over without repeating yourself.

Beverley is the best of the lot
By Dianne Rose
I'm a long time Beverley fan, and even I must admit this story does not show her at the top of her game but her story is definitely the best of this uneven lot.

In an age of world citizenship, literary scholarship is focusing increasingly on texts which communicate effectively over cultural lines. Advocating a planetary approach to contemporary literature, this critical text examines eight novels from eight cultures. The writers discussed are Julian Barnes, Magda Szabo, Abraham B. Yehoshua, Ian McEwan, W.G. Sebald, Murakami Haruki, Jonathan Safran Foer, and Azar Nafisi. Focusing on the authors' encouragement to meditate on life's most pressing issues, the essays here invite us to reevaluate postmodernism as a current category.

What could be an opportunity to rekindle their love and spend quality time together turns out to be a road trip from hell.

When a surprise snow storm catches them off guard, Bentley and Caroline find themselves in an accident without any possibility of help in their near future. At one point, their love was all they needed to survive. But now, when all they have is each other against the frigid winter storm, will they find the love they lost before it’s too late? Or will this be the end…in more ways than one for Mr. and Mrs. Harrison?

This is yet another amazing story by K Webster, it made every emotion in my body come to life. I loved it!
By Monsterella Reviews
Caroline and Bentley Harrison are a couple on the brink of divorce, only a few more months and it will be final. They fell in love in college and have become a force to be reckoned with. After moving to Vancouver and Bentley becoming a financier, Care a full-time housewife, their lives began to fall away from one another. Bentley worked long hours to bring in the big money while Caroline shopped and socialized trying to fit into her role, but their love for one another took a backseat.

That is until the trip to Louise Harrison's, Bentley's mother, for Christmas. On their way Bentley received an urgent call that the market was about to make a drastic shift, so he immediately searched for a signal on the back country road so he could pull over and get his work taken care of. Not very long after he found service and started working the signal faded and while he chased it again, along the road aptly named Us, they lost control of the car and went careening down the steep embankment. Bentley and Caroline were both injured in the accident and so was the car.

The near death experience was a wake up call for them both, they realized what they had and didn't want to give it up. They decided to fight for the love that had always been there, but they lost sight of long ago. They spent many days fighting the grueling winter storm in Caribou Country living off what little provisions they had and trying with everything they had to stay alive until help would arrive. Finding precious moments to reminisce about days gone by.

The time they spent together was exactly what they needed because by the time Harley, Bentley's brother, found them they were like a couple of lovesick teenagers barely able to keep their hands off one another. They vowed to always fight for their love and never to let the other get lost again. They even took a moment to stop for a picture with the Us road sign in the background, which turned out to be exactly where they would always stay. Their love swelling and growing right along with them.

Everything else is just a backdrop to the love story that is us” The Road Back To Us ...
By Amy Bosica
“Care is my life. My heart. My god**** soul. Everything else is just a backdrop to the love story that is us”

The Road Back To Us is a beautiful second chance romance. This book follows the story of Caroline and Bentley. Caroline and Bentley had the perfect romance. They fell in love, got married and thought they’d live happily ever after. Somewhere along the lines, life had other plans. Bentley became so focused on his work that he lost sight of what was really important. And Caroline began to resent him. Sure she never wanted for anything, but she was lonely and missed her husband. And after time, that resentment turned into anger. They find themselves in a spot that they never thought they’d be in, on the verge of divorce. However, with Christmas being right around the corner, they find themselves on one last road trip together. One last trip to save face with family before their entire world falls apart. Little did they know that this trip would have the power to change everything. An accident will put them to the test. With the reality that they may not survive, will Bentley and Caroline be able to put their differences? Will the two of them finally see just how precious life and love is before it’s too late?

I got lost in Caroline and Bentley’s story almost immediately. I was captivated by their situation. It was clear that despite their differences, the two of them still loved one another, but somehow, they lost their way. I was frustrated with the two of them and wanted to yell at them to stop their fighting and realize what a real and special thing that they have. They were both so stubborn. It took a car accident to finally put things in perspective. Let me tell you, I was rooting so hard for the two of them. Not many people get that second chance and here they’ve been handed one. I could only hope that the two of them would realize it before it’s too late.

The Road Back To Us took me on such a great journey. This is a great example of what a second chance romance should be. We all know that the road to happily ever after, isn’t always easy. It’s tough and sometimes ugly, but it’s so worth fighting for. This book had it all for me: romance, drama, angst, steam, suspense. By the time I got to the last page, I was grinning like a fool. This book is definitely one of my favorites from K. Webster.

I Need Another Star......
By Danielle A Cup and A Book
I was given a copy of the book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Holy wow!!!! K. Webster did it AGAIN! A-FREAKING-GAIN!

I loved this book so damn much it kinda hurts. I need another star. Seriously, six.

Anyhoo {takes deep breath}, I don't even know where to begin. So let' start with a basic overview. Bentley and Caroline have been together, well, forever. And somewhere along the way they both started assuming they knew what the other wanted and obliged. Needless to say, that didn't work out exactly as they hoped. Both "B" and (swoon) "Care Bare" lost not only their connection, but also a piece of themselves.

Caroline became caught up in presenting the "perfect wife" to Bentley's friends and colleagues and forgot who she was. She also allowed Bentley's desire and drive to succeed push her to the back seat in their life together. This, of course, caused her to resent him.

Bentley thought he was doing right by Caroline, providing her with a fantastic lifestyle she could be proud of. But, the resentment i mentioned? Yeah, he felt that. It made him work harder - but not on their marriage.

The emotional roller-coaster was amazing!!! K was able to pull me in from page one. I wanted them to see the light the entire time. I neeeeeded them to have open and honest communication so that I could be whole - that is how invested I became.

The petty arguments, the sexy scenes, the revelation of feelings; the entire package gave me something only a great book can give a reader....

THE FEELS! Yup, got them (and chills, goose-flesh, an occasional balled fist).

What are you waiting for? An engraved invitation? GO! Get the book! GO!!

From Publishers Weekly
Elaborating at great length on Robert Browning's cryptic narrative poem "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came," the second volume of King's post-Armageddon epic fantasy presents the equally enigmatic quest of Roland, the world's last gunslinger, who moves through an apocalyptic wasteland toward the Dark Tower, "the linchpin that holds all of existence together." Although these minor but revealing books (which King began while still in college) are full of such adolescent portentousness, this is livelier than the first. Roland enters three lives in the alternate world of New York City: junkie and drug runner Eddie Dean, schizophrenic heiress Odetta Holmes and serial murder Jack Mort. If King tells us too little about Roland, he gives us too much about these misfits who are variously healed or punished exactly as expected. Typically, King is much better at the minutiae and sensations of a specific physical world, and several such bravura sequences (from an attack by mutant lobsters to a gun store robbery) are standouts amid the characteristic headlong storytelling. BOMC alternate.

Better than the first
By KT
I was determined to get through book one and man it took a lot of patience. This book however reads much faster than the first. For the most part, this volume is an exciting and engaging read. However, for some reason I became very annoyed with the way one of the characters spoke and found myself skimming her lines because they literally gave me a headache. I have read a lot of reviews that say the first book is awful, the second book much better, and the third book better than the two previous. While I somewhat enjoyed it, I believe this will be the end of Roland for me. Just not enough interest for now to keep going (and spending money on each volume). Maybe I'll come back to it sometime in the future but it just doesn't have me hooked.

One of Stephen King's best
By B. Christensen
The Drawing of the Three really picks up the pace after the Gunslinger. While the book starts within a few hours of the end of the previous book, you can tell in just the first few pages that this one is going to be different. The tone is much less surreal and disorienting than The Gunslinger, it's much easier to grasp what's going on and feel more involved with the story. There's a significant course correction right away and then the book gets into the interconnectedness of worlds that is probably my favorite theme of the series.

I think the best part about this book is the establishment of some amazing characters. We get a better sense of Roland's personality as he interacts with new people and faces some challenges he can't just solve with his guns. Eddie Dean is possibly my favorite Stephen King protagonist, he's a great multi-faceted character who is genuinely likable and interesting to read. His journey in this book is just fantastic. Odetta's story is fascinating and totally unique. Reading this book a second time I was so happy to re-meet some of my favorite characters and know this is just the beginning of their story.

This book has many memorable moments that stand out in the series. The Dark Tower as a whole is Stephen King's greatest work, but this book stands up against some of his other classics on its own. It will leave you wanting more and the best part is that the 3rd book is just as good as the 2nd.

Book 2 of my favorite series
By Jeannie N
The Drawing of the Three is the second book of the epic Stephen King saga, The Dark Tower. This is the book that truly captivated me and pulled me into the world of Roland the Gunslinger. The first book follows Roland across the desert, chasing the man in black. This book expands upon that universe in very unexpected ways as Roland "draws the three" that were mentioned at the end of book one.

I highly recommend The Dark Tower series. If you read the first book, and you're undecided about continuing the series, please consider getting the second book anyways. It's an amazing series and the first book doesn't do it complete justice. This book really starts the series off properly.

The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon: A Novel, by Tom Spanbauer

Set against the harsh reality of an unforgiving landscape and culture, The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon provides a vision of the Old West unlike anything seen before. The narrator, Shed, is one of the most memorable characters in contemporary fiction: a half-Indian bisexual boy who lives and works at the Indian Head Hotel in the tiny town of Excellent, Idaho. It's the turn of the century, and the hotel carries on a prosperous business as the town's brothel. The eccentric characters working in the hotel provide Shed with a surrogate family, yet he finds in himself a growing need to learn the meaning of his Indian name, Duivichi-un-Dua, given to him by his mother, who was murdered when he was twelve. Setting off alone across the haunting plains, Shed goes in search of an identity among his true people, encountering a rich pageant of extraordinary characters along the way. Although he learns a great deal about the mysteries and traditions of his Indian heritage, it is not until Shed returns to Excellent and witnesses a series of brutal tragedies that he attains the wisdom that infuses this exceptional and captivating book.

From Publishers Weekly
Haunting and earthy, this deeply felt tale of love and loss is told by Shed, a half-breed bisexual Indian. In the 1880s, Shed, only a boy, is raped at gunpoint by the man who then murders his mother; he is then raised by Ida Richilieu--prostitute, mayor of Excellent, Idaho, proprietress of a hotel/whorehouse painted pink. Under Ida's tutelage, Shed becomes a berdache , or holy male prostitute, and makes love to resident hooker Alma Hatch, a former Bible saleswoman. Leaving home to seek the meaning of his Indian name, he becomes friend and lover of Montana rancher Dellwood Barker, who converses with the moon and may well be his father. Returning to Idaho, the two men join Ida and Alma in an odd extended family involving various sexual liaisons. Then the four black Wisdom brothers come to town: after Ida defends them against racist Mormons, ensuing events cause Dellwood to lose his marbles, Ida to lose her legs and Shed to lose his innocence as he discovers his true identity. Spanbauer ( Far Away Places ) fuses raunchy dialogue, pathos, local color, heartbreak and a serious investigation of racism in this stunning narrative.

From Library Journal
Spanbauer's second novel (the first was Faraway Places, Putnam, 1988) is the bittersweet story of a boy growing up with hard-drinking whores and assorted misfits at the end of Idaho's gold rush. Although his real name is Duivichi-un-Dua, he is also known as Shed. At times, Shed isn't sure who is crazier: the God-fearing citizens of his hometown Excellent, or his adopted family of whores and their admirers at the Indian Head Hotel. Other times, being half Indian, half white, and bisexual makes Shed crazy too. But Shed has a special strength he calls "killdeer," his own code of trust and self-preservation. Crazy or not, Shed tells what he calls his "human-being story" in a true and honest voice. Spanbauer's masterful plot is delightfully unpredictable and compelling. However, some readers may be offended by the unbridled sexuality of his characters. Recommended for large fiction collections.

From Kirkus Reviews
Gender and racial lines are bent out of shape in this tale of turn-of-the-century Idaho spun by a youth who is part Indian, not quite wholly homosexual, and in the grip of a powerful imagination. Spanbauer (Faraway Places, 1988) creates a pansexual West that John Wayne wouldn't have recognized. The narrator, brought up in an earthy but idealized whorehouse in the small town of Excellent, is called ``Shed,'' because it's out in the shed where he turns his tricks--from about age 12 on--after his full-blooded-Indian mother is murdered. He also has the Indian name of Duivichi-un-Dua, the meaning of which he seeks to discover. He feels some kinship to the Berdache, male Indians who lived as women before the uptight whites put a stop to it. In Excellent, the enemies of erotic and other pleasures are the patriarchal Mormons, who are pictured as rabidly racist as well. Meanwhile, the narrative voice, at its worst, is false naive; at its best, strong and vivid, creating an oddly convincing world as seen by someone on locoweed and whiskey. Shed forms a family with Ida Richelieu, the whorehouse proprietor and a whore herself; Alma Hatch, Ida's colleague and bedmate; and cowboy Dellwood Barker, who may be Shed's father but is most certainly his lover. Freud would have had a field day. The 384 pages offer plenty of plot twists, humor, graphic but not prurient sex, didacticisms, some magic realism (North American-style) and a consistent view of life that might be termed ``rebellious romanticism'' for the 1990's. A different view of the West where the bisexuals and prostitutes wear the white hats, gender is up for grabs, and every permutation of love will have its way. -- Copyright 1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. Loved it!
By Candi Sary
"The Man Who Fell In Love With The Moon" is like no other book I've ever read. Spanbauer is a fabulous storyteller! He does something magical on the pages as he brings his characters and scenes to life. The book's unique perspective of the Old West is fascinating. Yes, his characters are flawed and sometimes behave in ways that made me uncomfortable, but that's part of what makes the book so interesting. I read a review where the reader gave the book a low rating in part because she thought the mother was such a terrible person. I love when fiction offers "terrible people" and presents their stories so thoroughly that we might understand why they did what they did. I love a true exploration of human nature, not a safe, ideal presentation. Spanbauer doesn't hold back with his characters. He shows the ugly, the beautiful, the unspoken and the outrageous, creating a story so raw and honest, it's hard not to get caught up in his bizarre world. I opened my mind, stepped outside of myself, and just took in the experience. Every day I looked forward to picking up the book as I had no idea what to expect next! This is a most memorable and thought-provoking read.

Brilliant language, images, characters, caughtt in psychic whirl
By John B. Hills
The novel took and held my attention throughout. The language is bold, the images arresting (native Americans eviscerated in reservation ghetto; bacchanalian couplings of a boy with old men, old women; ordinary folk & LDS "at war"; elusive berdache mysticism). The tale is of an Idaho frontier world made up of extraordinary characters, brought through rousing adventures to bizarre, open-ended "transition", rather than to "death". Mind-altering drugs have both a destructive and a beneficial role in the lives of the characters. Toward the end of the novel, everyday plausibility seemed remote to this reader. A book for the open minded and forbearing, for those with a sense of humor. The author's more recent, "Now is the Hour", reveals more fully his gifted, original and haunting way with words and imagery, his insight into human nature, his control of sub-plots and total narrative. "Now is the Hour" also significantly sets forth the inherent worth of gayness. Characters not easily forgotten, truths not to be ignored make this reader hope that the writer will weave another fabric from these sorts of threads.

Great journey that stretches the imagination!
By Maurice Williams
Wow, what an incredibly trippy ride through the Wild West! Set primarily in the gold mining town of Excellent, Idaho during the early 1900's, this novel is filled with adventure and history, magic and adventure, love and debauchery, philosophy and religion. "The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon" is one of the more creatively imagined novels that I've come across recently. At its core is the coming of age story of the main character and narrator Shed, whose quest for a fuller understanding of self leads him on an odyssey that ends, as many do, exactly where it started. In the telling of this story, Spanbauer reinforces the idea that it's rarely the destination but the journey that transforms. Populated with characters both loveable and detestable the novel intertwines each character's story in a way that allows for an exploration of Native American beliefs, frontier values and the human debris that results when the two collide.

It's also a story about the importance of stories; "You can't stop people from talking" - explains Ida, the novel's heroine - "They talk and pretty soon you got a story, and what's a human being without a story?" "The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon" is not for the faint of heart. It can be seen as modern day ribald in the tradition of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales or an insightful philosophical debate on the nature of the human soul, or both. Vices and virtues intersect in this novel in ways that are at once shocking and enlightening. So get ready for a wild ride on this airship in route to a visit with the man in the moon. These are stories that are comforting and unsettling, familiar and eye opening. But, "you got to consider the source", cautions Ida, "a story about a crazy man, told by crazy people should only make you wonder." Kudos to Spanbauer for superb execution and many thanks to Dave M. for this recommendation. Enjoy!

Heaven and Hell, by Jon Kalman Stefansson

Jon Kalman Stefansson is the winner of the Icelandic Prize for Literature and has been nominated three times for the Nordic Council Prize for Literature. Heaven and Hell, is a perfectly formed, vivid and timeless story, lyrical in style, and as intense a reading experience as the forces of the Icelandic landscape themselves. Der Spiegel said it was "like an oyster--a glinting treasure in a rough shell."
In a remote part of Iceland, a boy and his friend Barour join a boat to fish for cod. A winter storm surprises them out at sea and Barour, absorbed in "Paradise Lost", succumbs to the ferocious cold and dies. Distraught from the murky circumstances of Barour's death, the boy leaves the village, intending to return the book to its original owner. The extreme hardship and danger of the journey is of little consequence to him--he has already resolved to join his friend in death. But once in the town he immerses himself in the stories and lives of its inhabitants, and decides that he cannot be with his friend just yet.

This was during the years when we were surely still alive. The month of March and the world white with snow, although not purely white, here it is never purely white, no matter how much snow falls, even though sky and sea freeze together and the cold penetrates deep into the heart where dreams have their home, the colour white never wins. The cliff-belts on the mountains rip it off as soon as it falls and jut out, black as coal, into the white world. They jut out black over the boy and Brur as they walk away from the Village, our origin and end, the centre of the world. The centre of the world is laughable and proud. They walk easily, young legs, fire that burns, but they are also racing against the darkness, which is perhaps fitting since human life is a constant race against the darkness of the world, the treachery, the cruelty, the cowardice, a race that often seems so hopeless, yet we still run and, as we do, hope lives on. Brur and the boy, however, intend only to overtake the darkness or twilight of the air, beat it to the huts, the fishing huts, walk sometimes side by side, which is by far the best because tracks that lie side by side are a sign of solidarity, then life is not quite so lonely. The path, however, is often not more than a single track that winds like a frozen snake in the snow and then the boy has to look at the backs of Brur’s shoes, at the skin bag he carries on his back, at the black tangled hair and the head that sits securely on the broad shoulders. Sometimes they walk across stony beaches, tread risky paths on cliff faces, it is worst on the Impassable, a cable fastened to the rock face, a sheer mountainside above, a sheer stone wall below and the surging green sea, a thirty-metre fall, the mountainside rises nearly six hundred metres into the air and the peak is covered in clouds. The sea on one side, steep and lofty mountains on the other; therein lies our whole story. The authorities, merchants, might rule our destitute days, but the mountains and the sea rule life, they are our fate, or that’s the way we think sometimes, and that’s the way you certainly would feel if you had awakened and slept for decades beneath the same mountains, if your chest had risen and fallen with the breath of the sea on our cockleshells. There is hardly anything as beautiful as the sea on good days, or clear nights, when it dreams and the gleam of the moon is its dream. But the sea is not a bit beautiful, and we hate it more than anything else when the waves rise dozens of metres above the boat, when the sea breaks over it and, no matter how much we wave our hands, invoke God and Jesus, it drowns us like wretched whelps. Then all are equal. Rotten bastards and good men, giants and laggards, the happy and the sad. There are shouts, a few frantic gestures, and then it’s as if we were never here, the dead body sinks, the bloodwithin it cools, memories turn to nothing, fish come and nibble the lips that were kissed yesterday and spoke the words that meant everything, nibble the shoulders that carried the youngest child piggyback, and the eyes see no longer, they are at the bottom of the ocean. The ocean is cold-blue and never still, a gigantic creature that breathes, most often tolerates us, but sometimes not and then we drown; the history of humankind is not terribly complicated.

I’m sure we’ll row tonight, said Brur.

They have just crossed over the Impassable, the cable did not break, the mountain did not kill them by pelting them with rocks. They both look out over the sea and up into the sky, whence the darkness comes, its blue no longer completely blue, a hint of evening in the air, the beach opposite has become harder to see, as if it has retreated, were sinking into the distance; this beach is almost perfectly white from foreshore to dune, reflecting its wintry name.

It’s about time, the boy answers, a bit winded after the hike. Two hours since they set out. They finished their coffee and cakes in the German Bakery, made three stops and then plodded out of the Village, a two-hour trudge through deep snow. Their feet are wet, of course they are wet, we were always wet those years, death will dry them, the old folk said when someone complained; sometimes the old folk know less than nothing. The boy adjusts his bag, heavy from what we cannot do without, Brur adjusts nothing, he just stands and watches, whistles a bit of a blurred melody, appears not to be tired at all, dammit, says the boy, I’mpanting like an old dog but it’s as if you haven’t taken a single step today. Brur looks at him with those brown, austral eyes of his and grins. Some of us have brown eyes, fishermen come here from distant places and have done so for hundreds of years because the sea is a treasure chest. They come from France, Spain, many of them with brown eyes, and some leave the colour of their eyes behind with a woman, sail away, return home or drown.

Yes, it’s about time, Brur agrees. It’s been half a month since their last fishing voyage. First a storm raged from the south-east, it rained, the ground became spotted and dark where it emerged from the snow, then the wind changed and came from the north, lashing its snowstorm whip for days on end. Storm, rain and snow for fourteen days, not a boat on the sea and the fish safe from humans for the time being, down in the deep stillness of the sea, where storms cannot reach; men seen there are drowned. One can say various things about drowned men but at least they don’t catch fish, they actually don’t catch anything except the gleam of the moon on the surface. Two weeks and sometimes one couldn’t move from one hut to another because of the weather, the howling storm wiped out the entire landscape in all directions, the sky, the horizon, even time itself, long since finished fixing what needed to be fixed, tied on the cod hooks, untangled the line, untangled all snarls except those related to the heart and the sex drive. A man or two struggled along the beaches, searching for mussels for bait, some used the time to make things, mended the waterproofs, but days spent tied to the shore can be long, they can stretch intoendlessness. It’s easiest to endure the wait with card games, play and play and never stand up except to attend to bodily functions, trudge out into the storm and relieve oneself among rocks on the beach, some, however, so lazy, or perhaps not so beautiful inside, don’t bother going down to the beach and instead shit right up near the huts, then say to the Superintendent as they’re coming back in, a project for you, pal! The boy is the hut’s super and thus has to clean up around it, he is the youngest, the weakest, could beat no-one in a wrestling match, and he was assigned the Superintendent’s post, that’s how life frequently is, those who aren’t strong enough have to clean up others’ shit. Two long weeks and when the weather finally settled it looked quite as if the world had returned, look, there’s the sky, so it’s true, it exists, and the horizon is a fact! Yesterday the storm’s fury had slackened so much that they could clear rocks from the landing, clambered down there, twelve in number from both huts, two crews, toiled away moving huge stones tossed by the sea onto the landing, mere pebbles beneath which they lost their footing, scratched and bloodied themselves, six hours of labour on the slippery fore-shore. This morning a wind blew from the west, rather weakly, but when it blows from the west the breakers frequently make voyages impossible, it’s a crying shame, almost vilifying, to see this foaming obstruction and the sea beyond it more or less calm enough for sailing. One’s temper is soothed, however, by knowing that cod shy away in the western wind, simply vanish, and besides, it provides an excellent opportunity to make a trip into town. Menleft the main huts in groups, the beaches teeming and the mountainsides crawling with fishermen.

Brur and the boy sometimes catch a glimpse of the group ahead of them and modify their pace in such a way that they draw farther apart rather than closer together, the two of them travel by themselves, it’s best that way, so much that needs to be said intended for just the two of them, about poetry, about dreams and the things that cause us sleepless nights.

They have just crossed over the Impassable. From here it is approximately a half-hour’s walk home to the hut, for the most part along the stony beach where the sea snaps at them. They stand high up on the slope, put off the descent, look out over more than ten kilometres of cold blue sea that tosses and turns as if impatient at the head of the fjord, and at the white beach opposite. The snow never fully leaves it, no summer manages to melt the snow completely, and still folk live wherever there is even a trace of a bay. Wherever the sea is fairly accessible there stands a farm, and at midsummer the little home-field surrounding it turns green, pale green areas of tussocky ground stretch up the mountainside and yellow dandelions kindle in the grass, but even further away, to the north-east, they see more mountains rise into the grey winter sky: these are the Strands, where the world ends. Brur removes his bag, takes out a bottle ofbrennivn, they both take a gulp. Brur sighs, looks off to the left, looks at the ocean itself, deep and dark, he doesn’t think at all about the end of the world and the eternal cold, but instead about long, dark hair, how it blewin her face in early January and how the most precious hand in the world brushed it aside, her name is Sigrur, and Brur trembles a bit inside when he speaks the name to himself. The boy follows his friend’s glance and sighs as well. He wants to accomplish something in life, learn languages, see the world, read a thousand books, he wants to discover the core, whatever that might be, he wants to discover whether there is any core, but sometimes it’s hard to think and read when one is stiff and sore after a difficult fishing voyage, wet and cold after twelve hours’ working in the meadows, when his thoughts can be so heavy that he can hardly lift them, then it’s a long way to the core.

The west wind blows and the sky slowly darkens above their heads.

Dammit, the boy blurts out, because he is standing there alone with his thoughts, Brur has set off down the slope, the wind is blowing, the sea churns and Brur is thinking about dark hair, about warm laughter, about big eyes bluer than the sky on a clear June night. They have come down to the beach. They clamber over large rocks, the afternoon continues to darken and press in on them, they keep going and hurry the final minutes, and are a hair’s breadth ahead of the twilight to the huts.

Short and simple story, told in deeply poetic way.
By Tony Covatta
This short work deals with a few days, perhaps three or four in the life of a young boy on the coast of Iceland, at sea and then in a mountain village not far from the coast. The boy accompanies his friend Barthur as they attempt to become fishermen, signing on as crewmen on a six manned boat that rows out into the open sea and catches cod by hand line, in the very early spring. Rough work, made worse as Barthur has forgotten his waterproof with disastrous consequence. It then falls to the boy to return the volume of Paradise Lost, translated into Icelandic, that Barthur has borrowed and become enamored with, to its owner in the village over the mountain.

The story is simple, but the telling of it is not. Steffansson like so many Icelandic writers is poet as well as novelist and he gives us deep insight into human nature, the rough life that the Icelanders live, the raw and naked beauty of it all, told in gorgeous, evocative but not gushy prose.

This is a beautiful book about incredible people living life under very basic if not minimal conditions, its subtext a disquisition on just how they do it. For those who are only familiar with Halldor Laxness, this is a worthy excursion out into the wider confines of Icelandic literature. It's a beautifully written, life affirming book about people who choose to live in this stunning but brutal land of ice and hidden fires below.

Highly recommended, although the book's linch pin plot element bothers me. I've worked outside in the cold and I have studied Milton. I may be prosaic, but I can't imagine anyone being so enthralled with Paradise Lost that they would forget their most necessary outer garment in life and death weather conditions. If you can get by that plot element, you almost have to consider the work perfect.
