This masterwork of American immigrant literature is set in the 1920s on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and tells the story of Sara Smolinsky, the youngest daughter of an Orthodox rabbi, who rebels against her father's rigid conception of Jewish womanhood. Sarah's struggle towards independence and self-fulfillment resonates with a passion all can share. Bread Givers is an essential historical work with enduring relevance. ( Amazon review)

Mazel tov!!!!
By John Paul Sassone
This story, written in the early 1900s, about a family of Russian Jews living on NY's Lower East Side is predicable in it's ending and melodramatic in it's writing style, but it is an important book in two ways. First it shows what lfe was like in the late 1800s, early 1900's, when people struggles to make a living and live in this country while trying to hold on to the old ways, the ways of the country they left behind. We see this in the father, who wanbted to do nothing but study the Torah while his daughters supported him. In Russia this was accepted, the idea of the full time scholor whose only responsibility was to read , study and pray. He cannot accept the fact that there is no room for study only, everyone has to work to succeed, and it drives him to make very bad choices.

It is also a book concerned with feminist ideas and ideals. The youngest daughter does not want the life where work is the only thing she has. She wants an education, will not settle for an arranged marriage, wants to be a teacher, wants more than to just support her family. It forces her to leave home and live alone, to break away from her tyrant of a father, to reject easy marriages, to work her way through college and to finall succeed at becoming a teacher. The story is predicatable, you know she will succeed and finally meet a good man, but she also learns you have to balance the past with the present and future.

A very interesting book, you just have to remember when it was written, and not compoare her writing style to something you'd see written today.

Interesting, Quick Read
By RaeRae91
My college professor had us read this book for class. I found it to be a really quick read as well as actually pretty interesting. We were required to answer an essay prompt and I easily was able to retain enough about the book to make an A on the essay. It is interesting to see how the father behaves towards women and treat his daughters. I enjoyed reading about Sara as she was trying to "become her own person" as we discussed in class.

A true story for thousands of immgrants
By Daniel F.
Anzia Yezierska, the author of this novel, lived at an odd time in American history. A land that was comprised of truly nothing but immigrants had started to shun them decades ago, and people who were newly arrived from the Old World were seen as subhuman outsiders not worthy of the name "American". Irish immigrants in the mid-1800's had to endure signs outside of shops that read "no Irish need apply". The years had not improved conditions substantially for new arrivals looking in awe at the Statue of Liberty as they set foot on their new home soil. The environment Anzia Yezierska grew up in when she immigrated to New York City from Poland likely reeked of this disdain. Worse yet, Anzia was a Jew, a group of people that most Americans hated even into the mid-1900's. Given her unfortunate place in the world, it's not surprising to see why Ms. Yezierska would write a novel like Bread Givers.

On its face, this novel seems to be deeply depressing. The narrator is the youngest of four sisters, named Sara, who lives with her parents in a dim, cold, small apartment that they can barely afford. Her father is a deeply religious and "godly man" who refuses to work in order to provide for his family, instead relying on the wages of his daughters to support him, much to his daughters, and wife's, chagrin. Sara resolves from the start of the novel that she will find a way out of the slums that she lives in and into a meaningful life of work for herself, and not her father. She resolves to become educated, and ultimately wants to become a schoolteacher so that she can support herself, something that is far out of bounds from her fathers point of view. The novel deals with problems of family strife, as well as intense poverty and its effects on people.

This novel is arguably Yezierska's best work, and although it is sometimes slowly paced, the actual story is interesting and well told. Every sentence on the page does feel as though it had actually been lived by someone, as it is ultimately Anzia's own story that she is telling, with only minor variations. Anzia reveals to us through Sara what it feels like not only to be an outsider, but to feel the hunger and want for food that she felt as a child living in the slums, the rattling of ones bones in the cold winter nights as they don't have heat to warm themselves, or the domineering behavior of a lazy and abusive father.

The Diary of a Kinky Girl, by Adela T

This is a true story. The story of one girl’s journey from innocent amateur to professional dominatrix. In a complex and secretive industry I received no training, never worked for any establishment or ever answered to anyone. I used my own initiative and my own ideas, made my own mistakes and learnt my own lessons. During the course of the book only the names of my clients as well as certain details regarding their looks and lives have been changed, to protect their privacy. Their desires, deviations and demands however have neither been altered nor edited.
The bulk of the book looks at my first year as an emerging dominatrix and reveals detailed encounters with my diverse bank of “deviants”: Some good, some bad, some sweet, some naughty. Some very, very, naughty. Other chapters are devoted to my “alter ego” as a charming dinner and event companion.

a journey with a dominant girl
By simone
the book gives you a look from the perspective of a dominant girl from her early experience (including some funny trial and error) to the refinement of more aware and professional skills.
There are a lot of amusing description of kinky sessions with an heterogeneus selection of clients given with an intelligent and sensible touch.
This book gives also an inside into the psychology of the relation between a dominant woman and submissive men
But if you read it really carefully you will discover much more... .
Really absorbing, sometimes tender sometimes desperate.

Whitty story depicting the path from a novice to a pro Mistress
By Jakob
A very entertaining read, written in a fun way by a clearly intelligent author. I found it interesting to read about the steps taken to become a pro-Domme, as well as the descriptions of various sessions and encounters.

I can strongly recommend the book to anyone interested in the scene, or anyone who wants to learn more about human sexuality and various fetishes.

Bright and Witty
By Quiet Night In
I enjoyed this book. The author tells her story with enthusiasm, insight and humour. The writing is refreshingly clear and simple. Adela T takes time to describe some of the formative experiences, in her home town in The Czech Republic and on a family holiday in the south of France, which she feels influenced the career and life choices she subsequently made.

In a sense, Adela's tale is a variant on the age-old story of a bright and ambitious young person, stifled by the limited horizons of her home environment, escaping to a more dynamic and exciting place, and making the most of her gifts and talents. Her story forms part of the bigger human story of recent EU enlargement, and the resulting mass movement of so many bright, resourceful and energetic young people to the countries that astutely opened their doors and seemed to offer them the best opportunities.

But it is the sexual interest and not the sociological perspective that will draw most readers to this book. The author is generous with anecdotes and observations regarding the many clients she encountered in her early years both as a professional dominatrix and dinner companion. In most of the early domination assignations she has no idea as to exactly what fetish or fantasy the client will wish to experience until she is face to face with him. Her ability to improvise and think on her feet proves essential.

Adela's first client wants to be kicked repeatedly in a tender part of his anatomy, a service of which she has no prior experience. Her first efforts are appreciatively received, but the client politely requests that she kick harder. Adela obliges: "My next kick would have converted a try from the touch-line on a windy day at Twickenham". His one hour up, the client leaves "with a smile on his face, but a slight limp."

The book is often funny, and I laughed aloud at several of the anecdotes. The author's dry sardonic wit and acceptance of the diversity of human sexuality is well pitched to bring out the humour in situations that others might find disgusting or distressing. Although the author sets up her business primarily to make a living, she is attracted by the innate edginess, enjoys much of the work, and obtains fulfilment and satisfaction from many of her professional encounters and relationships.

There is a summing up and an epilogue at the end of the book, in which the author summarises her general views on the men who form her prospective clientele, and her own motivations. In keeping with the rest of the book, the tone is uncomplicated and down to earth. One can agree or disagree with her conclusions, but they are clearly and honestly expressed.

Although this book only covers the first couple of years of the author's professional career as a dominatrix, it seemed to me to fit worthily into the tradition of `An English Madam', a biography of Cynthia Payne, which was in the 1980s the inspiration for the film `Personal Services', starring Julie Walters.

Indian Boyhood (Native American), by Charles A. Eastman

Charles Eastman, or Hakadah, as his Sioux relatives and fellow tribesmen knew him, as a full-blooded Indian boy learned the reticent manners and stoical ways of patience and bravery expected of every young warrior in the 1870's and 1880's. The hunts, games, and ceremonies of his native tribe were all he knew of life until his father, who had spent time with the white man, came to find him.
Indian Boyhood is Eastman's first-hand reminiscence of the life he led until he was fifteen with the nomadic Sioux. Left motherless at birth, he tells how his grandmother saved him from relatives who offered to care for him "until he died." It was that grandmother who sang him the traditional Indian lullabies which are meant to cultivate bravery in all male babies, who taught him not to cry at night (for fear of revealing the whereabouts of the Sioux camp to hostile tribes), and who first explained to him some of the skills he would need to survive as an adult in the wilds. Eastman remembers the uncle who taught him the skills of the hunt and the war-path, and how his day began at first light, when his uncle would startle him from sleep with a terrifying whoop, in response to which the young boy was expected to jump fully alert to his feet, and rush outside, bow in hand, returning the yell that had just awakened him. Yet all Indian life did not consist in training and discipline. In time of abundance and even in famine, Indian children had much time for sport and games of combat — races, lacrosse, and wrestling were all familiar to Eastman and his childhood friends.
Here too are observations about Indian character, social custom, and morality. Eastman describes the traditional arrangements by which the tribe governed itself — its appointed police force, hunting and warrior scouts, and its tribal council, and how the tribe supported these officers with a kind of taxation. Eastman also includes family and tribal legends of adventure, bravery, and nature that he heard in the lodge of Smoky Day, the tribe historian. But Eastman's own memories of attacks by hostile tribes, flights from the white man's armies, and the dangers of the hunt rival the old legends in capturing a vision of life now long lost.

My great uncle
By Kindle Customer
I enjoyed this book because it provides information about my family. My great grandfather was an older brother to Charles Eastman. I like the fact that it tells the story of a different time by an actual Dakotah person rather than a negative portrayal by someone from another race.

What it was like to grow up as a Native American little boy
By Annie Pope
There is so much myth about "the American Indian," or "The Native American," that for many non-Native Americans there is no way to understand what life was like on this continent before Euro-Americans wiped out those who lived here first.

This book, by Charles Alexander Eastman(Née Ohiyesa), offers a genuine first-hand story about what it was like growing up in the years before the massacre at Wounded Knee, when his tribe had to flee to Canada.

Ohiyesa's father was captured and imprisoned by American soldiers when his son was a very young boy. But by the time he was a teenager, his father was released from jail, and he went to Canada to reclaim his son. The boy went to American jails and ultimately was graduated from Dartmouth College as a physician. He went through a period in his life in which he wrote a series of books about the Lakota way of life, in which he explains values, belief systems, and the lifestyle he experienced as a child. Today, unfortunately, due to government imposed boarding schools during the first part of the 20th Century, this became a lost way of life and thought.

Ohiyesa's books are treasures for the soul. They are simple, spare, Spartan even, and beautiful. Above all, they are honest. And in their direct, one-to-one description of how humans lived so simply with nature, they are inspiring and spiritual.

Ohiyesa's books should be required reading for students of literature, sociology, American history, philosophy, and psychology. They are not written to lament the plight of a people. But dignifying the elegant ways of a tribe -- simply by recording it as it was -- creates and understanding. And once you understand, you cannot help but mourn for the natural and simple ways that were.

I read this book using Kindle Unlimited. The book could have been decent but the author needs to work on her story telling and fully developing her characters. I am beyond tired of authors putting out work that is poor quality. Please take pride in your work and if you are asking people to invest time and money in your books, then please put out a quality product.

I enjoyed the story. Love the storyline, it was more realistic because there are people who are there for you if you know where to go and who to ask. If you don't believe you can get sucked into exchanging your body to make a living. So Tamara you nailed it. I was happy when Leah met Matt and was able to get her son back, Terry back from CPS. Please read excellent.

Thanks

Review

From the reviews:

‘This is a brilliant, bold, and fascinating book. It is a work of stunning originality, combining traditional policy analysis with sociology, history, and philosophy to create a rich, textured account of the interactions between energy, culture, and technology. At a period of growing consumption and constrained energy supply in the United States, especially important are chapters assessing the remaining potential, reliability, and profuse benefits of energy efficiency practices and programs. It is a work that should be read by anybody even remotely concerned about energy, the environment, or the future of American society.’

(Art Rosenfeld, Commissioner, California Energy Commission and recipient of the 2006 Enrico Fermi Award)

‘While the diffuse energy challenges facing the country have never been so great, this book sheds important insight into how many of them might be managed and resolved. The myths debunked in this volume continue to complicate energy policy decisions and confound analysts, consumers, and politicians. This work is a must-read for anyone interested in American energy policy.’

(Kateri Callahan, President, Alliance to Save Energy)

‘For too long, U.S. energy policy has been directed by a series of canards so often repeated that they pass for common knowledge. By collecting the best minds to debunk the greatest of these myths, Sovacool and Brown have brought us a step closer to finding a national energy policy based on common sense.’

(Chris Cooper, Executive Director, Network for New Energy Choices)

‘Any thoughtful observer of U.S. energy production and consumption patterns might readily conclude that current energy policy has been driven more by myth and assumption than by even-handed assessment. As we work and build for the future - indeed, if we take seriously our responsibility to the future - our deliberations about smart energy policy must follow from a conscious and informed dialogue. Sovacool and Brown provide a bold and imaginative way forward.’

(John A. "Skip" Laitner, Visiting Fellow and Senior Economist, American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy)

"Considering how crucial solving our energy dilemmas will be to the nation’s future well-being, it would seem troubling how little consensus there is on basic elements in our energy policy. Benjamin K. Sovacool and Marilyn A. Brown take a step to address this matter with Energy and American Society: Thirteen Myths, new from Springer, in which the editors reach out to a broad range of policy experts to explode some of these misconceptions … . it tackles topics on a variety of issues." (The Electricity Journal, Vol. 20 (5), 2007)

"This book offers a valuable debunking of the various controversies surrounding energy policy … . The individual essay authors are experts from various energy-related disciplines and have picked 13 myths to discuss. … Summing Up: Highly recommended. All levels." (J. C. Comer, Choice, Vol. 45 (1), 2007)

"The contributing authors, prominent scholars and practitioners succeed in varying degrees in exposing the myths and replacing them with the truths. The effect is rewarding to both technical and non-technical audiences since the book is written in plain English and is easily digested by anyone with a rudimentary background or interest in energy economics." (Fereidoon P. Sioshansi, Energy Policy, Vol. 35 (12), 2007)

"Benjamin K. Sovacool and Marilyn A. Brown, using a similar pedagogic device, have developed a list of thirteen of their own myths … . My wish is that this fine book would be more available to and more appealing to a wider audience. Its messages are too important … . The material on the Thirteen Myths deserves … a wide audience, an audience that is out there, interested, motivated, and―armed with the information in this book―capable of driving change." (Martin J. Pasqualetti, Annals of the Association of American Geographers, Vol. 98 (2), 2008)

"Marilyn Brown and Benjamin Sovacool have done an excellent job of assembling a group of very qualified coauthors to produce this anthology of essays on energy and society in America. … For those wanting to explore the depths of energy illiteracy in America with definitive, detailed, and well-documented analysis, this book is a must read. From my own perspective, I really appreciate the range and depth of the topics covered along with the high quality of the writing." (Jeff Tester, Technology and Culture, Vol. 50, April, 2009)

From the Back Cover

Current events related to energy policy – skyrocketing gasoline prices, the 2003 Northeast Blackout, the Kyoto Protocol’s enactment, passage of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, and the influence of recent Gulf Coast hurricanes on energy supplies and prices – demand innovative approaches towards conceptualizing the relationship between energy and American society.

This book takes on a central quandary in the study of energy and environmental policy: What myths continue to exist in American culture concerning energy, the environment, and society? It enrolls twenty-four of the nation’s top experts working on energy policy in industry, government laboratories, utilities, nonprofit organizations, and universities to debunk and contextualize thirteen energy myths relating to electric power, renewable energy, energy efficiency, transportation, and climate change.

While the book focuses on the American experience, it will be of interest to those working in the fields of energy policy, energy and the environment, and technology assessment worldwide.

A readable, excellent resource
By John R Mashey
This is an excellent introduction to real energy issues, written by experts, with many useful references for further study. Energy mythinformation (inadvertent or otherwise) propagates all too easily, and this book does a good job of debunking the common myths.

Anyone involved in policies regarding energy&climate change should be familiar with this material, and that includes ordinary citizens, especially those who might care about the US economy and environment seen by any grandchildren.

I'd summarize the book as saying:
a) We face serious problems, as we *will* run out cheap oil, and then cheap gas [look up "Peak Oil" in Wikipedia], and if we keep burning coal without sequestering CO2, we will push the planet into a much hotter state with serious economic downsides. Right now, the US economy depends on cheap oil, and of course, it might be better not to be selling off big chunks of the US economy to other countries to feed our oil habit forever.

b) However, we actually have pretty good solutions for many of the problems, mostly without requiring magic technology leaps. There is no one silver bullet, but a myriad of small actions to be taken to stop wasting energy, many of which actually save money right away.

c) Most of the actions required are actually policy choices, with help from widespread use of existing technologies, plus rational R&D investments. Low electicity-per-capita use in some states has been achieved with no obvious economic catastrophes. [Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, and California are not usually considered poor places.] Of course, we have much further to go, but in many cases, it really is a matter of choosing to do the right things.

The editors provide an introduction and summary bookending 13 myth discussions by (mostly) other authors. Following is a list of the 13 myths, with comments on a few of the chapters:

1. Today's Energy Crisis is "Hype"

2. The Public is Well Informed About Energy

3. High Land Requirements and an Unfavorable Energy Balance Preclude Biomass Ethanol from Playing a Large Role in Providing Energy Services
- This is an especially important chapter, as the topic engenders much confusion. Not all biofuels need be from corn, and there is more land available than many think.

4. The Hydrogen Economy is A Panacea
- Dr. Joseph Romm shows why hydrogen (especially for vehicles) is a long way off, if ever, compared to PHEV/FF (plug-in-electric-vehicles with flex-fuels). He shows why research is appropriate, but not spending huge $$ for premature deployment, especially to the detriment of truly useful steps doable much sooner.

I also his recommend Joe's website [...] and his book Hell and High Water: Global Warming--the Solution and the Politics--and What We Should Do.

5. Price Signals are Insufficient to Induce Efficient Energy Investments

6. The Barriers to New and Innovative Energy Technologies are Primarily Technical:
- The Case for Distributed Generation
- In many ways, distributed generation of electricity would be more efficient, but power companies are geared for centralized generation, even with expensive long-distance distribution.

7. Renewable Energy Systems Could Never meet Growing Electricity Demand in America

8. Worldwide Power Systems are Economically and Environmentally Optimal
- Tom Casten and Robert Ayres show how far off we are, illustrating the efficiencies gotten with waste-energy recycling / cogeneration ... that are strongly inhibited by regulatory issues and market distortions, compared with places like Denmark or The Netherlands, etc. See Casten's website: [...]

9. Energy Efficiency Improvements have Already Reached Their Potential
- Amory Lovins shows why not, why "negawatts" are really cost-effective, and why nuclear plants don't seem very cost-effective compared to other options. I especially liked his description of his Rocky Mountain house that lacks a conventional heating system, but whose design cuts heat losses to within 1% of various free heat gains. "The last 1% can come from a 50-watt dog, adjustable to 100W by throwing a ball..."

10. Energy Efficiency Measures are Unreliable, Unpredictable, and Unenforceable

11. Energy R&D Investment Takes Decades to Reach the Market

12. Climate Policy will Bankrupt the US Economy
- California is pretty aggressive on this, because we have to be, as all the impacts of global warming will cost us money. Nevertheless, California is hardly poor, and we expect that reworking our infrastructure for energy efficiency, and heading towards minimal use of fossil fuels as early as we can, will only make us more competitive in the face of increasing oil costs.

13. Developing Countries are Not Doing Their Part in Responding to Concerns about Climate Change

This is a very useful book. I expect to study many chapters in further depth and chase down references.

This book will teach you something about energy
By J. Fernandez
I should state that I had the benefit of being a student in Professor Brown's class where we utilized this book.

That being said, many of the "myths" in this book are misconceptions that perhaps most of society today falls victim to. The book presents evidence from leading scholars in the fields of energy technology, public policy and economics which shed some much needed light on these topics and shows how interwoven they really are.

If you have an interest in where this country and the rest of world is heading in terms of energy reform, and what obstacles (both technological and political) lay in their paths, then this is an excellent book for you.
