A must-read for every clinician

Patricia Coughlin describes clearly, simply and in organized fashion, one of the most important contributions to therapy since Freud, namely Davanloo's ISTDP. You are left in awe, motivated to study the technique and use it, so that you could help your patients reach mental health effectively. It is one of the best books I've read in the field. I teach it to my students.

A more empathic approach to ISTDP than Davanloo's

Dr. Della Selva's book has enabled me to weave Davinloo's ISTDP into my own way of practicing psychotherapy. Having trained thousands of students including therapists in empathy since 1972, I deeply appreciate how she attunes to her clients while confronting their defenses. Her writing and case presentation style is clear and much easier reading than other ISTDP practitioners. Also, I like how she presents her theory.
As a result of her book, my work with my most resistive and dificult clients has gotten easier. I am witnessing more character change with less effort. Dr. Della Selva has been an excellent role model through this book and the transcripts of the cases she presents. I recopmmend the book highly to all therapists who want to improve their ability to help clients move past their defenses against painful affects and attain lasting character change.

The book is written with exceptional clarity

Dr. Della Selva has taken hold of Davanloo's technique and passed it through the furnace of her own personality, from wich it has emerged softened but otherwise unchanged. There is the same persistent concentration on the defenses and the same minute attention to the transference, demonstrating that it is possible to break through lifelong defenses within the span of a single interview and thus to "unlock" the unconscious , Dr. Coughlin Della Selva has mastered completely both the moment-to-moment use of her technique and the theory behind it. It's important to state that she does not follow Davanloo's technique slavishly; she differs from him on a number of issues. She emphasizes even more than he does the importance of defenses against emotional closeness; she explicity points out to her patients that in childhood their defenses were essential to survival; she emphasizes the need to reinforce and develop the vital functions of self-care and self-protection; and she often gives the patient words of sympathy and encouragement. The book is written with exceptional clarity - the reader never has to go back and read a sentence again to understand it, but on the contrary, is eager to read on.
