An Intense Journey With A Climactic Ending

Sonny McGuiness, an old prospector for years, converses with a Hopi Indian named Dennis about the "silver springs", a legendary location for untold riches. Dennis give Sonny directions but warns him that the Wah Wah Mountains in Utah are cursed. When Sonny finds the claim, he feels something strange around him and wonders how much of Dennis's tale was true. But creepy feelings aren't enough to stop Sonny, especially when he discovers that the "silver" is really an unusually pure mass of platinum.

The claim is purchased by Earthcore, a company led by a cutthroat named Connell Kirkland. Connell has lost all emotion after the death of his wife, making him an icy, deadly adversary in the corporate world of mining. He'll let nothing and no one stand in his way, even going so far as to hire ex-NSA "interrogator" Kayla Meyers to seek out the truth of the Wah Wah claim. Kayla is beautiful and deadly, and has a true passion for her work.

Connell assembles a team of the best-of-the-best in their fields for the initial exploration of Earthcore's new find, using utmost secrecy to avoid the competition getting wind of the vast platinum mine. He hires Dr. Angus Kool, a genius with three PhD's, a scientist who's sociopathic behavior goes far beyond his arrogance. Joining Angus is his assistant, Dr. Randy White, also rated in the genius range. Mack Hendricks, an Australian Engineer, is pulled off a current dig to join Connell's crew. Running security for Earthcore is Patrick O'Doyle, an ex-assassin from the military, a hard, scarred man who takes his job more seriously than his own life. Assisting O'Doyle is Bertha Lybrand, a heavily muscled warrior and exceptional soldier. Crashing the party, to protect un-explored cave systems, are archeologist Dr. Veronica Reeves and her mentor/father figure Sanji Haak, who've been written up in Nation Geographic for their similar dig in the mountains of Argentina. Last is Cho Takachi, the security guard assigned to watch and monitor Sonny's movements.

With a surprisingly sophisticated base camp established outside the vast cave and tunnel systems that lead toward the dense mass of platinum, the exploration begins. Sonny, on-site as part of his monetary agreement with Connell, suddenly wishes he'd stayed away. The longer he stays near the Wah Wah's (which he'd christened Funeral Mountain) the more uneasy and fearful he's become. Sonny and Cho have dug up the past of Funeral Mountain, and found nothing but failure and death. Nevertheless, he's unable to stop Connell and his Earthcore party from entering the mountain. All are in danger, and not all will make it out alive. There's something alive down there, and it doesn't like visitors.

Sigler has written a fantastic sci-fi thriller. Starting as a podcast, Earthcore was later published as a book. Contrary to what other reviewers have said, the characters are not weak but fully fleshed individuals, each with their own virtues and flaws. The environment is painted so real that I could feel the heat, feel the claustrophobia of the tunnels. The book is very fast-paced, the ending so exciting you won't be able to put it down once you've reached the last 100 pages. I was deeply fascinated by the race discovered below, and mesmerized by their evolution. The intense race to return to the surface left me breathless, biting my nails as I read on. Sigler is a remarkable new author, definitely one to watch out for. Pick up a copy of Earthcore for the ride of your life. I highly recommend this book. Enjoy!

Must read for anyone into Sc-Fi, Monsters and adventure!

WOW!! My first impression 50 pages into this book was "WOW" and that did not change one iota after finishing it. After reading Contagion and it's predecessor by Scott Sigler, I could not wait to get my hands on anything else written by him. Earthcore is incredibly hard to find a copy of - especially if you want it both in English and at an affordable price, but it is absolutely worth the effort and the inflated used book price. (This is coming from someone who tries to never pay more than $10 for ANY book) I blew through this book in a day and half - I could not put it down and found myself walking down the hall reading with one eye and walking with the other eye. The action is insistent and anxiety driven with tiny little breathers spaced far and between - much like those the characters received. The characters that you assume will lead you through the adventure twist and change and by the final chapter you really haven't a clue who will be left standing and who will be taken - violently, screaming all the way. While a few other reviewers have described this book as scary or horrific, I would hesitate to use those words.... Earthcore is more along the lines of constant anxiety and a nagging feeling of something stalking you just beyond the edge of your vision.

This book reminded me of "Descent" (by Jeff Long I think) from some years back. It has a similar theme, but Earthcore is no knock off of "Descent" and stands on it's own fair and square. Earthcore was still rattling around in my head hours after finishing it and I sorely wished I had a sequel to follow up with. Totally a must read!!

Demonic Depths

This fast-paced horror-science fiction romp is an exciting and non-stop action story. I enjoy such things, trying to create something of the same mood in Season of the Plant, although I come nowhere near the skill of this author. I have a background in geology, have gone into unexplored caves, and can relate to the excitement and mystery which surround plumbing the depths of our planet. What these explorers discover, however, is a wonderfully amazing and horrifying one. Well described, action to the last page, with primary characters unfortunately flawed (especially the protagonists) which make the book really worthwhile in the long run.
As in Ancestor, which I read prior to this work, the author creates a villain who epitomizes all the qualities which create endless concern for others to the very end.

Jest w niej wiele cennych informacji o suplementach ,badaniach i napisana jest bardzo przystępnym językiem.
Osobiscie książka ta jest moją biblią a raczej elementarzem.

Hashimoto - Clear and Simple

My mum has Hashimoto. As Polish is her first language...learning about this dis-ease in English can be overwhelming. With a book in Polish on Hashimoto she was able to clearly understand and make the necessary changes in her life. Izabella is a very gifted and copetent teacher/guide on this little know about condition. She offers practical, easy to understand and comprehensive information which will get you onto the path towards healing and feeling better. With some simple changes, patience and perseverance you can kiss thyroid disease goodbye. The final straw for me was when conventional wisdom (western doctors) wanted to remove my mothers thyroid...I thought there has got to be another way - and there is. Please do yourself a favour and get this book. You deserve it!

Fun & Entertaining

I read a lot of books and sometimes I'll hit a series that sticks out from the rest of the pack. This is one of those series. It's light fiction, entertaining, easy to read and satisfying. I've read the whole series and find myself really looking forward to the next one. I was sort of surprised that I'd enjoy it as much as I did. I stopped reading Queen Betsy books a few back, and was looking for something to fill that gap. This series does that admirably. If you're a paranormal fan this one delivers. There's hunky vampires, sexy djinn and slathering werewolves. Vampires, Djinn and Werewolves... Oh MY! Plus designer shoes, retro fashions and a little bit of OCD to break things up and keep it real. Definitely worth a look.

These books are a light and enjoyable read! I like all the characters for the most part. My only gripes are the love triangle between Lily, Sebastian and Aidan (must there even be one?!) and the "who's the best for Lily" arguments between Bast and Aidan. It got annoying pretty quick in the first book and while it lessens a little in the 2nd I still found it annoying,

Also I found Helena and Julian very interesting! Maybe we'll get novella with a little of their backstory!

I Loved the Twist

As the third book in the series, Sucking Bites was an excellent read. I was completely blown away by the twist that comes in the middle of the book. Team Aidan will certainly be smiling from ear to ear after reading this one. While I still think Hell Hounds Are for Suckers is my favorite, this was definitely a close second. If you haven't read the series, start with Sucking in San Francisco. You won't be disappointed in this series and will be begging for more.

About the Author

James W. Nybakken is a professor of biological sciences at the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, a consortium operation of seven of the California State Universities. His research interests are in the feeding ecology of certain groups of predatory marine gastropod molluscs. Dr. Nybakken is a fellow of the California Academy of Sciences and has served as an officer in five scientific societies.

Mark D. Bertness is the chair of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Brown University, where he has taught for 25 years. His areas of expertise include the ecology and conservation of natural shoreline communities, as well as salt-marsh and rocky-shore ecology and conservation, which he has studied extensively in South America. Dr. Bertness earned his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in 1979.

I had to buy this book for a marine ecology class. I found the text very easy to understand and straightforward. It covers a wide variety of subjects, but because of this it does not go into great detail on many things, which is unfortunate.

In the translator's preface, John Rothgeb focuses on the public reception of the book and places it in the context of Schenker's later works.

About the Author
Donald Shorter was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to Pastor Roosevelt and Mary Shorter, and at the age of 12, Don was born again and accepted his call to ministry at the age of 18. While attending Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Washington, he met a beautiful young lady, the former Kathy Lynette Hill, who later became his wife in July 1974. Upon completion of college, Dr. Shorter embarked upon a highly successful secular radio and television broadcasting career as a television host on the Seattle, Washington ABC affiliates. However, his call to the ministry remained the impetus in his life, and in January 1987, with his family of four, Pastor Shorter founded Pacific Christian Center Church. Dr. Shorter received his masters in business administration in 1993, was ordained by Dr. Frederick K. C. Price in 1994, and received his doctorate of ministry in 1999. Each of these events has played a significant role in his success as a pastor. Today, under the oversight of Dr. Don and Kathy Shorter, Pacific Christian Center is a worldwide ministry that ministers to thousands each week through speaking engagements, radio and television broadcasts, regular church services, and business seminars. Through their teaching and faith-based outreaches, such as Real Dads in America, Kathy’s Kids, Excellence in Business, Men of Excellence, and Women of Wealth, the Shorters touch many lives. Dr. and Mrs. Shorter are the parents of three children--Monet, Dawnet, and Donald Jr.

Short and to the point!

This book is such a help to me as lately I have been allowing my thoughts to control me and therefore bring me down.
The book packs a lot of punch in each paragraph. I have started using the techniques and already can tell such a difference in my thinking patterns. Highly recommend.

Alcohol is the most widely used drug in the world and alcoholism remains a serious addiction impacting over 20 million Americans. Once widely considered a depressant, recent research strongly suggests that alcohol impacts the central nervous system in a variety of ways, both as a stimulant and a depressant. Our current understanding of alcohol’s impact on the brain and the related damage of alcoholism is being revolutionized by genetic research and brain imaging technology. This volume in the Handbook of Clinical Neurology is the only comprehensive introduction to alcohol and the brain covering our basic understanding of alcohol on the central nervous system and the diagnosis and treatment of alcoholism. This volume will be of interest to clinical neurologists, and researchers in basic neuroscience and behavioral neuroscience focusing on alcohol and the central nervous system.

About the Author
Edith V. Sullivan is Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. She received her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the University of Connecticut. Following graduate school, she was a research scientist in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Ashton Graybiel Spatial Orientation Laboratory at Brandeis University.
As a neuropsychologist with expertise in neuroimaging, Dr. Sullivan has championed putting the "neuro" into neuropsychology and has done so in her research and through her editorship of Neuropsychology Review. Her research combines quantitative brain imaging and assessment of component processes of neuropsychological functions to the study of neuropsychiatric diseases and normal function over the life span. Dr. Sullivan's interest in brain related conditions grew out of her experience as a researcher at MIT in the late 1970s to mid-1980s. There, she had the opportunity to work with the famous amnesic patient, H.M. Inspired by the component processes approach used in lesion research, she has applied these concepts to dissect impairments in cognitive and motor function in patients without focal lesions. Her early work focused on Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and schizophrenia. Over the last two decades, the mainstay of her research has been on both normal aging and alcoholism-related brain injury in human nonamnesic and amnesic alcoholism and animal models of excessive alcohol exposure. Her research has resulted in identification of brain circuitry disrupted in alcoholism and elucidation of spared circuits that have the potential to enable functional recovery with sobriety.

Dr. Sullivan is the author of more than 250 peer-reviewed papers and numerous chapters and reviews. She serves on the editorial board of Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, Brain Imaging and Behavior, Hippocampus, Frontiers of Neuroscience, and Neurobiology of Aging. She is the recipient of several NIH funding awards, including the Senior Scientist Research and Mentorship Award, a grant for international collaborations on alcoholism research, and an NIAAA MERIT award for studies of neural circuitry modification in alcoholism focused on frontocerebellar systems. She also received the NIAAA Keller Award.

Adolf Pfefferbaum is Distinguished Scientist and founding Director of the Neuroscience Program of SRI International and Professor Emeritus, Stanford University School of Medicine. He received his M.D. from the University of California, San Francisco, completed Internship in Medicine at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, was Research Associate at the NIH, and did Residency training at Stanford.

For nearly 40 years, Dr. Pfefferbaum has combined medical clinical skills with scientific rigor and creativity to develop and apply electrophysiology and neuroimaging approaches for identifying in vivo brain markers of the effects of long-term, alcohol dependence. His longitudinal neuroimaging studies using quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have revealed alcoholism's scope and limits of recovery of brain structure and function. With diffusion tensor imaging to quantify the microstructure of white matter, Dr. Pfefferbaum has shown fiber degradation in alcoholic men that related to memory and attention; in alcoholic women, fiber compromise occurs in normal-appearing white matter. His seminal contribution using functional MRI revealed that alcoholics recruit broader areas of brain than controls to perform at equivalent levels on working memory tasks. In addition to naturalistic studies of human alcoholism, Dr. Pfefferbaum has an active research program using rodent models of alcoholism, employing macrostructural, microstructural, and functional imaging enabling translational research.

Dr. Pfefferbaum has been the principal investigator on numerous NIH-funded grants, including a Merit Award from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). He has also served the NIAAA as a member and chair of the Alcohol Biomedical Research Review Committee and of the Center Reviews and Special Emphasis Panels. Most recently, he was named a member of the NIAAA National Advisory Council. Dr. Pfefferbaum is a member of a number of scientific societies and is a fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology. He is on the editorial board of Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, Psychiatry Research, and was co-editor of Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging for many years. He has published more than 350 peer-reviewed papers and 50 chapters and reviews. His many honors include Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Alpha Omega Alpha. In recognition of his innovative work in electrophysiology, the American Psychiatric Electrophysiology Association presented him with a Career Contribution Award. His scientific contributions to our understanding of alcoholism have been acknowledged through reception of the Keller Award from the NIAAA and the Begleiter Award for Research Excellence from the Research Society on Alcoholism.
