This fun-read, must-read lets us know how every club has fared in the MLB draft

Derek writes a very intriguing book here. How have all baseball teams done in the draft since it first began? You will find all those answers here. This work is well researched, with tons of interesting data about every Major League franchise's draft picks. If you love baseball, particularly with regard to draft and scouting analysis, this book will keep you turning pages until late into the night. Highly recommended.

Very good book that uses and explains advanced baseball statistics

Speculation about player trades and movement via free agency is always a popular topic of conversation between baseball fans. Often they wonder how their favorite teams would have done had they not traded away this player or if they had signed that one instead of letting him leave as a free agent.

This book by Derek Bain will help answer that question. He takes all thirty current major league franchises and using advanced statistical analysis, he ranks each team by evaluating players with their original teams. He then takes these revised rosters and determines their standings each season from 1901 to the present. It makes for fascinating comparisons between the “original” team of a certain year or era and the “actual” team.

This may sound complicated, but once a reader actually studies the charts and analysis of his or her team, it will begin to make sense. It took me a little while to catch on while reading about the Athletics, for example, but once I remembered that this analysis was done using players who originally signed with the Athletics, not the actual rosters for that season, then it began to make sense.

The statistical analysis uses primarily the advanced statistics of Wins Above Replacement (WAR) and Win-Shares for each player. This isn’t to say that the traditional statistics that many baseball fans are familiar with such as batting average, earned run average and runs batted in are not used. They are cited frequently in the narrative for each team. However, they are not the final determination for the rankings of each team – again, it is primarily WAR and Win-Shares.

One does not have to be familiar with these statistics to get the total value of the book. As long as a reader can follow the charts and narrative sections for the teams, then he or she will get the intended value of the book. I do not consider myself to be fluent or knowledgeable on WAR or Win Shares, but it was a lot of fun to see how my favorite team, the Minnesota Twins, did with their “original” players over the years, including their time as the Washington Senators. This book is recommended for any baseball fan who is interested to see how his or her team fared in finding talented players throughout the last century.

All encompassing guide without a bunch of unnecessary fluff

I work in a global company of around 40,000 employees. We have a lot of people with the title and certification of "project manager" but we have very, very few who can drive projects to completion. I think one root cause of this is because traditional PM methodologies are all about documentation and tracking:
+ Charter
+ Scope
+ Schedules
+ Cost
+ Resource hour tracking
etc. . .

With all such documentation requirements (I'm not saying they don't have their place), too many PM's get caught up in "documentation-itis" and when something starts to have challenges a common response is, "Well I sent them an email," or "It was on the task list with a due date."

This book isn't exactly about "how to get it done", but the simple fact that there is chart after chart of comparison of PM 1.0 versus PM 2.0, really shows that as the business needs have changed, also methodologies and focus are finally changing.

What I further liked about this book:
+ I already mentioned comparison charts
+ Lots of good color diagrams
+ Bulleted lists, where each item could be it's own chapter, but that isn't the scope here. He gives us the list of what we need to know.
+ How the PM fits into the organization
+ How the PM can help strategic planning
+ He doesn't just cover risk as a general topic, but gets into specific of political risks too
+ Something I haven't seen in many other PM books, which is how to address being a PM on an R&D Project

The author simply asking lots of questions on a section helps move the tactically-minded person to thinking more strategically. This coupled with lots of "how project management brings value", get one's head out of the weeds of task tracking and into the mindset of driving a project from a higher level. I wish more leaders and customers who don't get the need for a PM/PMO, would read several of these sections.

My current team is a group of business and reporting analysts. We don't necessarily "do projects", but we've incorporated some Agile methodologies into our processes in order to keep our tasks organized and our communications flowing. What I like about PM 2.0, it I could take some of the "new way of doing things" and apply them to my team, so I can help develop and coach my team to learn to drive and lead decisions and meeting in order to get the job done.

OVERALL: Overall it's still has a lot methodology focus. But it's balanced more than PM 1.0 by introducing our focus more on our stakeholders and changing environment. PMBOK is not about how to do project management but mostly terminology and concepts. This gets closer to helping a PM know how to get the project complete. I'm finding it a very good read and reference book. If anything, it's 100x easier to read than the PMBOK!

Excellent for the Right User

This is arguably the most comprehensive and thorough guide to project management available. Essentially a textbook for MBA students as well as consultants and corporate project managers, this book tackles the challenges of project management in a world that is becoming more technologically complex, virtual, interrelated yet decentralized, and constantly changing. The author begins by presenting "PM1.0" or the more traditional systems of project management. Using charts, he clearly demonstrates why the old methods no longer work and explains how the PM 2.0 system will correct flaws in the earlier system. The book then breaks down the PM 2.0 system into great detail.

The book is very well-organized (again, much like a textbook) with a clear design, clever and creative graphics, and valuable tables which provide quick visual guides for the text-based content. Most of the book uses an attractive black/gold/blue color scheme as visual dividers for the material, and occasionally full-color charts are used to highlight key concepts. One of my favorite examples is in the Project Management Methodologies section (Chapter 6), where the author presents the challenges of design freezes-- that point in a project where no further changes can be made without incurring greater costs. In a multicolor graphic he demonstrates to the reader how a $1 change at the definition stage of the project could cost $10,000 at the customer delivery phase. This relatively simple formula would be a great way for a project leader to illustrate to their team why changes need to be considered early in the process and only introduced conservatively toward the end.

And that brings me to my review heading about the "right user." This is not a text for the average person who is not directly responsible for project management at a high level. It is clearly written for a consultant, a leader of a Research & Development team, a head of marketing, or others in similar positions-- or for students studying to become leaders in those areas. If I were a high-level project manager (I manage projects but not nearly on the level as described in this book) I would use this as a means to educate my team about the key components of successful project management, and to understand what we are doing and why we are doing it. For that reason, I particularly liked Chapter 8 which focuses on the role of the project manager in transformational leadership, and provides excellent suggestions for getting buy-in from your team as well as other participants in the change process.

This is not a book you’re likely to pick up and read cover-to-cover. But it’s one you’ll reference again and again if your career takes you into the business world. This is not just for project managers. This book provides valuable information for all roles on a project. Many people will buy it as a textbook for an upperclass or graduate-level college course in project management. If you’re one such buyer, this is a book you’ll want to hang on to for a long time. It’s much more than a textbook - it’s a reference book on how to complete projects successfully. It will also help you determine how to define the parameters of success early in the project.
The book begins by laying out how effective project management has evolved in recent years. The “old” 1.0 version focused on tracking time, cost, and scope. But that’s no longer sufficient to measure success. It used to be that if the project was trending to be on time and within budget, it was in good shape. Now, many more factors need to be considered. Many of these factors are external to the project and possibly completely out of the control of the project team. But they still can significantly impact the value of the deliverables of the project to the sponsor(s). These factors are described in detail in the book.
There is no single best way to manage projects. What this book provides is an extensive toolbox of valuable practices that can be put to use as part of a comprehensive methodology. Large enterprises will have their own Project Management organization and a well defined process that should encompass most of the concepts laid out in this book. Other companies will be able to bring in external PM resources with the required expertise. Just saunter up to the buffet and select the elements that are appropriate and valuable to the execution of the project you are about to begin. If you try to incorporate the full gamut of tools and practices in a simple project, you’ll end up with an inefficient bureaucracy. Use too few and your project is at risk of spinning out of control. The important thing is to have a documented, repeatable process in place to effectively manage your projects. This book provides the blueprint to design, build, implement, and execute that process.
Bottom line: Project Management is about managing expectations and keeping ahead of the questions and concerns that sponsors and stakeholders will have about the execution, completion and ultimate value derived from a project. This book provides all the tools you’ll need to do just that. Keep it handy because you’ll come back to it over and over again.

Definitely worth the read

I have always loved basically any kind of books that have a Greek mythological influence, and so over the years I must have read dozens by now – but I’d have to say that Erin Kinsella’s “Olympian Confessions” would certainly be in my top 3, and that’s saying a lot considering I, admittedly, can be quite critical toward the genre sometimes. I am always afraid of giving away spoilers in reviews, but I will end this saying that the book is a must-read for anyone looking for an Olympian tale that is expressed through a vivid, visually-rich writing style that compliments the complex structure of the plot perfect.

As interesting as Greek Mythology can be with all of its various and detailed characters and the roles they played, there is something that the historical context lacks, and that’s personality.

Olympian Confessions brims over with the charisma and temperaments that you would expect from the gods who mythically walked the earth while we were but an audience to their glorious and thundering interactions. This book let’s you feel like a part of the mythology as an emotional and detailed tale unfolds that immerses you in colossal settings from Mt. Olympus to Hades.

This is a like a breath of fresh air! A love how the author develop a plot of Greek mythology in an entirely different level. It’s nice to see Hades as a protagonist instead of the usual “bad” God among his fellow Olympians. The character building is remarkable. Each character including minor ones were given the right introduction, that even if you don’t know much about Greek mythology, you’ll still be able to understand the story. This is not just a love story; it has heart-pumping action and unexpected twists that will surely keep you glued to your seats. Highly recommended!

good survey of "modern" architecture and tools for building modern web apps

Having just wrapped up "Client-Server Web Apps with JavaScript and Java" by Casimir Saternos (O'Reilly, 2014), I'd say that I _mostly_ got out of it what I wanted, and that it serves as a good jumping-off point for developers that want to build "modern" web applications on top of the JVM. More than anything else, Saternos' book is a thumbnail sketch of the architecture and tools needed to build those kind of apps, but it does not go particularly deep on any one of those items. As it says in the preface, it's probably best suited for developers who primarily work in Java and want to build a scalable web application with modern technologies -- not that front-end developers don't stand to gain something as well, but they may have more catching up to do (more on this in a moment...).

Saternos' basic approach here is to describe "modern" web applications as RESTful, API-based back-ends that primarily serve JSON to a rich front-end that is built around something like AngularJS. However, he doesn't limit himself to just the API and front-end layers here. Even a glance at the table of contents will reveal that he goes for breadth in his discussion: there are chapters on REST fundamentals and API design, API implementation with tools like Jersey, testing strategies with JUnit and Jasmine, build and deployment tooling, virtualization strategies, and more. The book's coverage is fairly shallow, but Saternos provides many references to other sources for richer coverage, and he also provides sample code with example implementations for each relevant chapter.

Was there anything missing? Yes and no... Again: the book is a shallow survey of these technologies, and as such it elegantly fulfills its main mission: to give an overview of the technologies that you would use when constructing a modern web application in the JVM. And again: there are plenty of references to solid foundational texts for those instances where you need to go deeper on some particular subject. But there are also seem to be some gaps.

First, some front-end developers may feel a bit lost coming into this; working in the JVM can be a bit daunting to the new-comer, and piling dynamic languages on top of this can be a bit eyebrow-raising. Part of me thinks that this is absolutely the right move -- I know a lot of front-end developers that are right at home in Ruby or Python, and so using JRuby or Jython as the introduction to the JVM makes sense. But there are also esoteric complications that come along with that which are not really addressed in the book. Not that a survey such as this is the right place to cover that kind of edge-case trivia, but a footnote to that effect may have been useful.

Second, the chapter on "Packaging and Deployment" focused exclusively on the server side of the web application with no substantive mention of how to package the front-end assets. Where was the discussion of minification and concatenation? Considering the depth of the discussion on REST and HTTP earlier in the book, I would have expected to loop back around on that here for a discussion of CDNs or Expires headers. This seemed like a lost opportunity to me.

In the grand scheme of what Saternos set out to do however, those critiques are pretty minor. That he assumes the reader has more familiarity with the JVM than with front-end technologies is evident, but not a detriment. The book is a good look into what technologies and techniques make up a "modern" web application, and though there is plenty of room for disagreement about some of his recommendations, it is also a great "conversation-starter" for your project, and chances are that you'll learn about a thing or two that you'll want to chase down further.

A developers notebook, rather than a tutorial.

This book provides an overview of Web app development using javascript and the Java virtual machine (JVM). The approach taken by the author is to point you to various online resources (tutorials and articles) after providing a quick introduction/discussion of a given technology or tool. So although this book is very short (225 pages) it provides a very broad scope of topics from IDEs to software life cycle management (build and deployment technologies), so provides at least an order of magnitude more material than the page count. This means to get full value out of the book while reading you need have an internet connection and a browser - so I would recommend the Kindle edition over the print version as this will save you having to type in the numerous compact URLs that are provided throughout the book.

The book would have better been called Client-Server Web-Apps with Javascript and the JVM - rather than Java. The JVM is a state machine that runs a bytecode that can be generated by a compiler of a programming language - Java being the eponymous one, but there are several others: Scala, Clojure, Dart, Jython, JRuby, Groovy etc., and the book goes into some length to examine some of these alternatives.

This book's target audience is the experienced developer who is looking to move to JVM Web-App development. Less experienced programmers will probably find the book hard to follow as there is no narrative app that pulls all the threads together.

Nice Overview

This is a great overview of the popular technologies used to create Java EE web applications. For an experienced developer this is a great way to discover nuances and technologies outside of your expertise areas.

The chapter on "REST and JSON" is perhaps the best overview I've read of REST, with a trivial mention of JSON.

I don't really care for the bit.ly URLs which are sprinkled through the book since in many ways they are more difficult to type than a clear but longer URL, but the book does contain a wealth of these URLs for further investigation.

You won't "learn" any specific technology by reading this book but it may help you understand the big picture and expose you to a few ideas you may have only vaguely heard of.

So if you are an expert Java EE developer but you haven't had a chance to work with Maven, JQuery, Jython, JRuby, Angular, VMWare, VirtualBox, Vagrant, Packer, LXC, Docker, Jasmine, Cucumber, etc, etc, reading this book should make you a more well rounded developer (or at least more aware of these technologies). Don't expect to learn any Java (nor any JavaScript other than several examples of flaws in JavaScript), but do expect to gain awareness of some other technologies that may benefit you.

The author does a very good job of pointing out that JavaScript is flawed, yet this book falls short of showing you how to use JavaScript effectively (instead it points you to read a few resources like "Douglas Crockford's JavaScript: The Good Parts").

Not what you can see in the look inside

I have sent back the book to Amazon. While you can see color photos in the "look inside" at the Amazon's website, the book comes with tiny black and white photos at very low resolution. Thus, it is impossible for instance, to see the position of the hands in specific techniques. Moreover, although the Korean text is good for those who speak Korean but I find the author should focuse in one language and count on translated editions for other markets. This would reduce notably the size of the book and could include further explanations about each technique, which I also found them very limited.

Great book to use as a technical reference, with technique names in korean and english.

The book gives a pretty good overview over most techniques common to various Hapkido styles, and also adds a bunch of functional ground techniques not commonly taught in Hapkido. As another reviewer commented, the book I received had photos in b/w, instead of in color as seen in the preview, which make it harder to see what's going on in some of the photos. However, as I already know most of the techniques in the book, I will primarily use it as a technical reference, and for that role it's perfect.

Also, as someone else pointed out, the text in the book is in both korean and english, with each technique first described in korean(in hangul nonetheless), and then in english, with the name of most techniques spelled out in korean hangul, romanized hangul and then english. I think this is great, as I finally have learned correct korean names for several of the techniques I have only learned with numbers or names in english or in my native language earlier, and the fact that each technique is also described in korean, makes it much easier to practice them with koreans who may not speak any of the languages I do.

The ground fighting portion of the book seems for the most part to be lifted straight out of BJJ (including the names of the techniques, such as butterfly guard, americana, omoplata, etc.). That said, the ground techniques presented is all good, practical and mostly basic BJJ of white and blue belt level, and should complement traditional hapkido practitioners game well.

All in all a very good book, but i can imagine that the fact that the photos i B/W can be a turnoff for some people, especially since all the techniques is demonstrated by two people both wearing white doboks/gis against a gray background.

The board is now set, let us begin

By far, this is my favorite of the three books in The Cadicle series. This time we’re not focusing completely on the boy genius/future commander Wil. Enter Saera, outcast, intelligent, shy, unlikely candidate from Earth, who takes the opportunity to join the TSS as a new beginning to her life. She quickly realizes she can only escape her specific situation, not the behaviors that caused it. Saera decides to fully embrace her choice and be the best at what the TSS can make her. Her intelligence and determination grabs Wils attention and soon a friendship is formed. The relationship is exactly what Wil needs to break out of his shell/depression and enjoy life. This is exactly how I'd expect a teen to behave, super genius or not.

Pros:
• This book is more meaty and substantial than the previous books, so it’s a much longer read. Having an advance version, I’ve read my pre-release copy twice now.
• The character development of Wil is great. Wil is treated more like a person, less like an object as I felt he was in the previous book. There is less of the “you’re going to save the Taran race” and more “we’ve a problem and are hoping you’ll solve it” attitude towards Wil. His anxiously awaited graduation and the challenges he faces are handled with intelligence and grace.
• Our view of this world (universe) keeps expanding and we fill in more backstory, including more on the Priesthood, the Sietinen High Dynasty, the Bakzan empire.

Cons:
• None I can think of. This book addressed the problems I had with the previous two books, namely the length of the novel and the time jump between Architects of Destiny (Cadicle #1) and Veil of Reality (Cadicle #2).

Bonds of Resolve is the exciting third book in the Cadicle series and I became so engrossed with the story that I had trouble putting it down, even to go to sleep!!!! This series overall has me absolutely rivited with it's twists and turns and mystery - if only the author could write faster so I don't have to wait too long for the next book. Bonds of Resolve introduces a new character - Saera is a young woman from Earth who has been selected for TSS training and who just so happens to catch the eye of Wil Sights. The two develop a close friendship that slowly develops into romance. They are both well suited to each other - both have had difficult experiences that have left mental scars. Through their relationship they are able support each other's needs. What I really enjoy about Amy DuBoff's writing is her ability to get into the minds of her characters and their complex inter-relationships with other characters. Du Boff has a true understanding of the complex entwining of emotions - both physical and mental that people feel when they fall in love - there is a true tenderness and honesty - a meeting of minds in the love that develops between Wil and Saera, There is no doubt that both characters will be a force to be reckoned with against the Bekzan (the enemies of Tararia). As ever the Priesthood remain in the background, manipulting the course of events and their power is evident in Tararian politics - The Bonds of Resolve throws up more questions - like why there are no women in the Priesthood and what their true motivations are???? Can't wait to find out further developments in the plot-line - highly recommend the Cadicle series.

Book #3 in the Cadicle series is a much welcome addition to a series that I have enjoyed getting in to. Book one was a good intro to this interesting universe. Book two was good setup for the story we are jumping in to. And now book 3 gives us a great start to the epic space opera that this series is supposed to be.

I enjoyed the fact that book three is getting us into the meat and potatoes of the conflict against the Bakzen. We actually get to see just how big this conflict is and is going to be. There are more things I'd like to say about it but I'd rather not give away details that are better discovered just by reading the book. I will say though that I do like how the author addresses the stress put on the main character. Often times books ignore just how hard and complex large scale operations can be for those involved. I feel DuBoff really does a good job of adding in the details often left out in such massive stories, and one of the reasons I was interested in reading a "space opera" in the first place rather than the usual sci-fi series which is just different stories in different books that happen to take place in the same universe with the same or similar characters.

At the end of the day, I can't wait to read book 4 as I expect there will be a lot of awesome things contained within its pages.
