Then, within each chapter, the authors have integrated a set of extended case studies based on a selection of ten "core" countries. Serving as consistent geographic touchstones, students get to know these countries as they accumulate conceptual knowledge. The cases are placed in chapters where they make the most sense substantively-not separated from theory or in a separate volume-and vividly illustrate issues in cross-national context. An array of thematic features extends the book's analysis and effectively integrates case material: -Case Studies Forming the backbone of country coverage, these "baseline" cases are substantial enough for students to build foundational knowledge about the ten core countries of Brazil, China, Germany, India, Iran, Japan, Nigeria, Russia, the UK, and the U.S. Because each case is tied to an analytic question or idea, students aren't lost in a sea of detail, but rather see country coverage in real thematic context. -Mini-cases Because no group of core countries can illustrate the full scope of issues in comparative politics, the authors include "mini-cases" throughout the book. These briefer cases focus on topics such as state failure, ethnic violence, and economic differences and feature countries about which most other texts say very little: Afghanistan, Chile, Cuba, Guatemala, Kenya, the Philippines, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Sierra Leone, Vietnam, Zimbabwe, and others. -In Context These short fact lists-like those students might find in an opinion-leader periodical such as Harper's-take simple data and put them into interesting, often provocative context. The number of military coups in Africa versus Latin America or the change over time in the number of one-party states might surprise students and offer enlightening perspective for thinking through an issue. -Where and Why? In these boxes, students explore why certain events and developments happen in some countries and not in others. Why have some countries been able to develop enduring democratic governments, while others remain or become authoritarian? Or, why do some states have women in powerful political positions while others do not? -Country and Concept The majority of chapters include a table that shows key indicators for the core countries. For instance, in the chapter on the modern state, the authors include such data as each state's year of establishment, its failed state ranking, its government revenue as percentage of GDP, and its rating on the corruption perception index-all important measures of each state's size and nature. Introducing Comparative Politics is a very user friendly and comprehensive text with an innovative design. It combines a very useful degree of theory and defining concepts with interesting case studies. Its special strength is to interweave the case studies within each chapter, such that the issues are highlighted instead of just the political history. This should allow the student (and professor) to focus on the comparative aspects of the cases, which is the goal of a political science course on comparative politics -- Scott Morgenstern I thoroughly enjoyed Introducing Comparative Politics. The book's organizing framework is quite clear and well done, and the mini-cases throughout the text are well-selected -- Clement M. Henry I am very impressed with Introducing Comparative Politics: Concepts and Cases in Context. The book is exceptionally well done, and the treatment of the cases throughout the chapters is excellent and makes the book extremely user-friendly. The authors are very clear, accurate, and write in an accessible style -- Ricardo Rene Laremont

Very good design, middling execution

I assigned this text for my comparative politics course because I've been very dissatisfied with the way comparative politics texts are generally designed. Most focus either on concepts and theories or on "cases", where the cases amount to a chapter-length discussion of the entire political history of some country. Instructors generally have to combine both books, and never have enough time to get through all of them. Students are also stuck learning a lot of historical facts that aren't directly related to the core concepts of comparative politics (E.g. "What was the name of the dynasty ruling China in 500 BCE?"). What is needed is a text that teaches the concepts while applying them to short, focused cases (where the cases are events, regimes, political figures or organizations, not whole countries), making all kinds of comparisons along the way.

That's what the Drogus and Orvis text does. A lot of the cases are great, with some from smaller less "important" countries (like Tanzania, the Philippines, and South Korea). Several of the conceptual chapters are also high-quality. The chapters on the state, the varieties of democracy, and on political institutions are the best I think; in general the discussions of political economy are the weakest and are overly narrow. There are also some glaring factual mistakes and bad charts. For example on p. 330 there's a meaningless chart which purports to show that Iran actually scores better on democracy and human development than the Middle East average. A small distinction if deserved, but the info in the chart actually doesn't support the claim. In the political economy section as well I found that some claims were outdated or just wrong (e.g. saying that Brazil's "recent" economic growth has been weak).

When my students shell out $80 for a text, I want them to trust the information presented, and I hope some of them keep the book for reference. But when publishers don't do a thorough job of fact-checking (and even basic copy editing) you can hardly blame students and teachers from feeling ripped off. This is not to pick on this text or specifically on CQ. This is a problem with many textbook publishers. I'll keep using this text, but I'll hope later editions are better.

Tilley's 5 -Minute Veterinary Consult book has been an extremely valuable asset to my library. When the CD-Rom came out, it was even more useful in that immediate and current information can be retrieved much faster than picking up a book. It is faster since topics related to a case can be searched for and reviewed with a touch of your mouse. This information can be quickly printed and given to clients to further understand their pets diagnosed condition. This printed information alone is priceless! A client that has something in hand and can follow and confirm their veterinarian's diagnosis and treatment, helps establish the trust a client needs to have in their pets doctor.
I reach for my 5- Minute Vet Consult CD-rom more than any other resource in my library. It is very accurate and has a surprising amount of detail to assist in the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of each topic. The drug search is a very helpful formulary for those quick reference needs. The most recent CD has a good number of cytology and radiographic images attached to the topics. These can be enlarged to see more closely the great detail.
In my opinion the 5-Minute Veterinary Consult CD-Rom was one of the best reference investments for my practice. It is definitely the most utilized reference I have. Time is money and this has saved me many steps and thus time and money. Every practice needs this reference without doubt!

Great user-friendly reference for vet students

This book is great when you just need the down and dirty on a disease, and don't want to wade through a 50-page description in the heavy-duty references. It was also very useful during second-year, when you're just trying your hand at figuring out the diseases, and need a little confirmation of your diagnosis and treatment plans. Or, when you're totally clueless and need help get started in the right direction. Fair warning, faculty usually won't accept it as 'reference' especially if you're trying to argue a point, but during a recent open-book final, I brought mine in anyway and there was practically a mob of other students rushing over to check out one thing or another.

My vet suggested me getting this book (I have worked for him for 6 years) and I am glad I did! It has 4 different sections in it, "Presenting Problems and Physical Findings", "Diagnostic-Laboratory Tests", "Diagnostics-Electrocardiography", and "Diseases and Clinical Syndromes". Each section has detailed information on each finding, usually two pages per each problem, which covers the Basics (definition, signalment, causes and risk factors), Diagnosis, Treatment, Medications, Follow-up and a Miscellaneous. There is plenty of information in the Appendix section of the book as well. Including a Formulary, Conversion Tables and more! I would highly recommend it to vets, students and vet techs.

The third edition organizes the coloring book in a more user-friendly way. Each section is introduced by a non-colorable page on which the various plates (map and text pages) of the section are outlined. This provides an overview of what lies ahead, and in the process makes the individual plates more meaningful.

The use of a very bold, non-colorable type face for various headings make identification of subject matter much easier—the balloon lettering of names and places, that is an essential part of the coloring system, is now used strictly for coloring purposes.

A dramatic new plate (67) has been added to the size comparisons section in which 20 of the most populated nations are listed. The previous plate just dealt with size based on area comparisons. Population figures are estimates through 2003, based on current rates of growth. At best, these are rough estimates; accurate figures, particularly in less-developed nations are unavailable, and birth rates are beginning to drop in almost all nations. There is still considerable population growth in the non-industrialized world, but increasingly at unexpectedly lower levels.

Space accorded to world thematic plates has been doubled to allow the reader to concentrate on a single theme for each plate. Although these plates appear in the rear of the book, they are important enough for you to consider reading them first, even if you don't wish to color them at the outset. Much of the terminology used throughout the book regarding weather, climate, wind patterns, ocean currents, varieties of vegetation, land use, population, race, languages, and religions, is given special attention in these thematic plates. Familiarization with their meaning can only enhance the use of the book.

The eight historic land empires—particularly the Islamic and Ottoman empires—take on additional importance in the age of international terrorism, which is currently a threat from militant groups within Islamic nations. The tenets of the Islamic religion are described in the text accompanying the maps. The use of modern maps in conjunction with empire boundaries helps the reader understand current cultural distinctions and conflicts.

The index / dictionary /quiz at the end of the book has been opened up with additional space inserted between each entry. This improvement makes the use of material that much easier when using the dictionary entries as the basis of a two-way quiz: trying to identify names associated with the definitions, or trying to define the entry names.

This book was helpful to a college student.. me!

I took a geography course about a year ago at Florida State University that required this book. The class and professor were very challenging (especially for an entry level course), and this book really helped me visually place my thoughts. I guess it also helps that I enjoy coloring and find it to be a stress-reliever in college. I think being able to color in the maps at your own preference, but still with the great organization that the book lays it out in for the reader really makes this book an excellent choice for anyone trying to better understand geography of all sorts.

Excellent Book!

My oldest son used this book in his 9th grade honors history class. At the time I thought that was odd, to have an honors student coloring. However, with all the budget cuts with schools, they have dropped History for 9th graders, which means no more Geography in high school. I have 2 daughters that are home schooled in 8th grade and I ordered this book so they could learn where the countries are. My son, that used this book, really knows his Geography well. I have just started with my girls on this book and it's awesome. They are learning countries they have never heard of, along with knowing where the countries are that they have heard of. It's very helpful to color the names of the country, then outline it, color it in, and read about it. I highly recommend this book. I am really enjoying learning the countries as well. There are plenty of places that I have heard of but can't quite place where they are exactly and this book is a fun way to figure that out.

Best required reading material I've ever been assigned. I thought it was funny that a coloring book was required for my geography class, at least until I actually looked through it. This book is loaded with useful information, maps that offer real insight into our world, and it's also super fun to color those maps. Whether you're required to complete this coloring book or not, I'd recommend it.

I wanted to thank you for inviting me over to your quaint home for dinner. I can always tell the character of a person by the cleanness of their home. The carpet deodorizer did a lovely job of adding fragrance to the air and covered some of the burned smells coming from the kitchen. (Did you know you were supposed to vacuum after using the deodorizer, dear?)
I also wanted to complement you on your table decorations. I understand that you’re new to home ownership and gardening, so there was no way to know that the flower arrangement you picked was full of rag weed. The children’s repeated sneezing was not distracting at all.
But, the main point of my letter was to get the recipe for your tomato sauce. I have never had a sauce with such a distinct flavor. I am usually known for my palette and ability to distinguish flavors, but your sauce has confused me. I could not detect any basil, garlic, onion, olive oil, pepper, or salt. So enlighten me, if you will. Other than tomatoes and water, what did you put in it?
Well, again it was a joy coming over for dinner. I am glad to see that my son and his children, because of your cooking, are remaining fit. Yes, there is no evidence of your spoiling them in any way.

Just finished reading this with my girlfriend, and there are no words. It is occasionally inoffensive and always funny throughout. Anyone who has experienced an overbearing mother, either his/her own or someone else's will find this a must read bit of catharsis. Everyone else can still enjoy a chuckle at some of the crazier moments.

Everyone knows the butt of jokes is the helpless well meaning MOTHER in law. Well, this one is the mother in law that the jokes are made about. This women needs to be sent far far away. Terrific ending. I hope I will never be like that ain the patriot old hag is. Good luck to you all that have that most hated of family members
