Defining bullying and cyber bullying on paper isn't difficult, but identifying and responding to them in real life can be very challenging.  When a child is targeted by social cruelty, how can an adult tell if it's a single act of meanness, or part of an ongoing bullying attack?  If a student posts a humiliating photo, did they intend for it to be seen widely?  How can adults gauge the impact of cruelty on children, if they don't tell us?  How can we educate children about communicating in digital environments, if we can't know every single app or website they use? This book focuses on the nuts-and-bolts of bullying and cyber bullying prevention. Some steps can be taken by both parents and educators. For example, all adults can learn to identify and respond to gateway behaviors that enable bullying. There are also observable clues that can help us determine when we need to support and coach children through social problems, and when we need to directly intervene. Similarly, although adults often believe they must be familiar with every individual app or website, cyber-research has actually identified a handful of common mistakes and misunderstandings that occur in almost all digital environments; discussing these can help children avoid most of the worst problems on any website or app. Parents can read about how to leverage their unique role in addressing social problems when they arise; likewise, school settings represent an important opportunity for educators to introduce and reinforce positive social behaviors and to educate children about the use of digital communications so as to maximize skills and minimize cyber bullying.

A MUST READ for Every Adult Who Cares about Kids

At last! A book on bullying and cyberbullying book that goes deep on a complex topic and provides research-based solutions! Not only do I agree with the subtitle: “What every educator needs to know"!, I want to add: “what every educator, parent, professional or any adult who cares about kids needs to know.” The author and researcher, Elizabeth Englander has compiled the definitive text on all the most recent research available today on bullying and cyberbullying--issues sadly too much in the news and too much a part of our everyday lives. In her book, she also examines the processes for detecting and understanding the behaviors, explains the role digital technology plays in the problem, and offers research-based strategies for responding. As a pediatrician, parent educator, and children's advocate, I whole-heartedly congratulate Englander on her extensive, thorough work and encourage all caring adults to put Englander's ideas to address bullying and cyberbullying to work in your homes, schools, and communities. I will be sharing her insights and helpful solutions on this complex topic in all my school trainings and in my parent talks.

Informative and Useful

I am a clinician treating adults, adolescents and families. Although I thought this book was intended for educators, it turns out to be incredibly useful for me as a clinician in my treatment of patients! The book goes through, in a very sensible and down-to-earth way, what we really know--and need to know-- about bullying and cyberbullying and how to effectively approach these issues with kids and with schools. In addition to being a clinician, I am also an educator. This intellectually stimulating book is of value in both domains. It is very well-written and holds the reader's interest. I can't recommend it highly enough; I'd give it ten stars if i could!

About the Author
Michael Whitman, Ph.D., CISM, CISSP is a Professor of Information Security at Kennesaw State University, Kennesaw, Georgia, where he is also the Executive Director of the KSU/Coles College of Business Center for Information Security Education. In 2004, 2007, 2012 and 2015, under his direction the Center for Information Security Education spearheaded KSU's successful bid for the prestigious National Center of Academic Excellence recognitions (CAE/IAE and CAE IA/CD) awarded by the Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Agency. Dr. Whitman is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Information Security Education Journal, and Director of the Southeast Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition. Dr. Whitman is an active researcher and author in Information Security Policy, Threats, and Curriculum Development, as well as Ethical Computing. He currently teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in Information Security. Dr. Whitman has several information security textbooks currently in print - Principles of Information Security, 5th Ed., Management of Information Security, 5th Ed., Readings and Cases in the Management of Information Security, Volumes I and II, The Hands-On Information Security Lab Manual, 4th Ed., Principles of Incident Response and Disaster Recovery, 2nd Ed., The Guide to Network Security and The Guide to Firewalls and Network Security, 3rd Ed. all from Cengage Learning. Herbert Mattord, Ph.D., CISM, CISSP completed 24 years of IT industry experience as an application developer, database administrator, project manager, and information security practitioner before joining the faculty at Kennesaw State University, where he is Assistant Chair of the Department of Information Systems and Associate Professor of Information Security and Assurance program. He and Michael Whitman are the authors of Principles of Information Security, 5th Ed, Management of Information Security, 5th Ed, Readings and Cases in the Management of Information Security, Principles of Incident Response and Disaster Recovery, 2nd Ed, The Guide to Network Security, and The Hands-On Information Security Lab Manual, 4th Ed all from Cengage Learning. Dr. Mattord is an active researcher and author in Information Security Management and related topics. He has published articles in the Information Resources Management Journal, Journal of Information Security Education, the Journal of Executive Education, and the International Journal of Interdisciplinary Telecommunications and Networking. Dr. Mattord is a member of the Information Systems Security Association, ISACA, and the Association for Information Systems. During his career as an IT practitioner, Dr. Mattord was an adjunct professor at Kennesaw State University, Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Georgia, Austin Community College in Austin, Texas, and Texas State University: San Marcos. He was formerly the Manager of Corporate Information Technology Security at Georgia-Pacific Corporation, where much of the practical knowledge found in this and other textbooks was acquired.

Fair Read, not to shabby!

Required text book for Intro to Info Security class at my college. It's an easy read for a person in the I.T. field because if you're reading this book you should be beyond basic computer administration and networking. Thus the jargon/industry lingo will be better digested and understood. I wish it prepared a student to take the Security + exam though, that's the only thing I dislike about this book.

I like this book!...interesting, almost amusing. It is a scholarly work, good popular scholarship, written by a Jewish scholar written for the non-specialist and addressed to ordinary readers.

The author writes in his preface: Humbled before the incredible achievements of the psalmists, I can only modestly offer this commentary and guide to enjoying the Psalms as literature. If I hereby introduce any to this challenging and edifying literature or add new insights for others, my reward will be complete. In my opinion, the author succeeds very well. --Society of Biblical Literature, 2015

About the Author
Rabbi Benjamin J. Segal is an author and lecturer living in Jerusalem. He is a past president of the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies the academic and educational center of Masorti Judaism in Israel and Melitz, the Center for Jewish and Zionist Education. Earlier in his career he served as the director of the Ramah Programs in Israel. His translation and commentary, The Song of Songs: A Woman in Love, was published in 2009. He has also authored Returning: The Land of Israel as Focus in Jewish History (revised 2005), several study texts, and numerous articles on Bible, Jewish Thought, Education, and Zionism. He has taught in various educational and academic venues in Israel and North America. He was at one time chairperson of the Masorti movement in Israel and a member of the Executive of the World Zionist Organization. He is presently chairperson of the Directorate of the Meimad (political) party in Israel and serves on the boards and steering committees of several nonprofit educational organizations. Rabbi Segal was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in 1969 and served as a pulpit rabbi in Palo Alto, California. He moved to Israel in 1973 and lives in Jerusalem with his wife Judy. The Segals have five children and fifteen grandchildren.

Insightful commentary on 'Tehillim'

If someone were to ask if we need yet another reading, or re-reading of Tehillim (The Psalms) I would say 'Of course if it adds to our understanding'. And this rereading by Benjamin Segal does this by combining a great deal of scholarly information with his own interpretations. He is not at all dogmatic but often suggests various interpretations leaving it to the reader to choose between them.
He focuses on literary aspects of the Psalms and in so doing reveals layers of complexity I would never have guessed in my own simple straightforward reading. I believe that all who feel close to the Psalms will gain from studying and reading this work.

Frances Jensen, MD, is a professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School and a senior associate in neurology at Children's Hospital Boston. Good but could be better

I was a little leery of this book from the opening pages. Dr. Jensen opens with a horror story - her teenage son came home with his hair dyed black. She just couldn't imagine how such a level-headed kid could do such a thing. And, worse, he wanted to get red streaks as well. So her solution was to spend a fortune taking him to her "color guy" to get it done right. I guess Dr. Jensen and I have different ideas on parenting. I made a vow early on never to sweat the small stuff, and I consider hair color well within that category - if that's the worst my kids do in their teenage years, I will count my blessings. Furthermore, if they're going to experiment with hair color, they can take responsibility and accept the consequences themselves. Green hair is not fatal.

But maybe the information on the teenage brain is better, and we can just agree to disagree about parenting. Dr. Jensen clearly knows her stuff as far as brain development, anatomy, physiology and chemistry go, but I found her information a bit weak, disorganized and failing to thoroughly connect the dots, and I found many of her illustrative stories distracting and a bit alarmist.

Dr. Jensen starts with an overview of brain structures relevant for cognitive and emotional functioning, including, among others, the brain stem, the amygdala, the hippocampus and the cerebral cortex, especially the frontal lobes. She shows how brain development is a process of both "pruning", in which excess neurons are selectively cut back based on environmental stimulation or lack thereof and "myelination" in which the neurons are coated with a fatty sheath with helps to send signals faster along neuronal pathways. The pruning allows for specialization of function within brain regions and allows neurons with to "fire" and "wire" together creating associations to learn new information and hone new skills. Myelination allows different brain regions to be more connected and integrated.

These developmental processes start from the back, more primitive parts of the brain and work forward toward the more advanced "executive" parts of the brain. The amygdala, for instance, is one of the most primitive parts of the brain which allows for recognition of and response to threats and stress. It is highly reactive to emotion, but until the frontal lobes are better developed and integrated, the child/teenager has little ability to process and manage that emotion and control impulses.

The processes of pruning and myelination are part of brain "plasticity", meaning that the brain has great potential to change. For a long time it has been thought that this period of great plasticity was limited to early childhood (up to about age five), which is why early childhood enrichment and learning have been considered so important. But science is now showing us that adolescence (beginning in the early teen years and continuing through young adulthood, approximately the early twenties) is another period of great plasticity. Which means that teens are capable of learning and changing nearly as much as young children. This means that adolescence is an exciting time of opportunity, growth and development. But it also means that the perils of the teen years are even more intense because negative experiences during these years are more likely to be encoded in the brain and lead to life-long emotional, relational, legal and general health problems.

Dr. Jensen spends a chapter discussing what this means for teens' ability to learn and the importance of sleep (along with a discussion about teens' diurnal cycles, indicating that teens' tend to be sleep deprived because they are biologically programmed to go to sleep and wake up later than adults, but are nonetheless required to function on adults' schedules and how this is potentially harmful for teen brain development). She then spends a chapter discussing risk-taking behavior in teens and how the reward centers in teens' brains are wired to respond much more excitedly to potential rewards (including and especially peer approval) than adults' brains - to the point that teens have difficulty evaluating risks if the pull of the reward is too strong.

Next Dr. Jensen spends a chapter each discussing potential harmful influences and obstacles frequently encountered in the teen years, including tobacco, alcohol, pot, stress, mental illness, digital overload and concussions, along with how those factors can affect teens' brains and why teens are so much more susceptible to their influence. I do have an issue with her chapter on stress because she seems to be saying that teens are under a lot more stress than adults. I think it's more that teens have fewer and less developed coping mechanisms than adults, so the stress they have seems greater ("drama"). But I'd say it's absurd to suggest that someone who has a home and food to eat is under more stress than the parents who are working to provide that home and food.

Finally Dr. Jensen wraps up with a look beyond adolescence into young adulthood and how continuing brain plasticity offers unique opportunities, yet continuing perils, for young people. She provides some advice on how to help the burgeoning adult in your life make a successful transition, which is pretty much just a developmental continuation of her advice for structuring your teens' life for maximal likelihood of success. Basically it boils down to don't be afraid to be involved in your child's life. Although the quality and intensity differ as children age, children continue to need supervision and guidance well into adulthood.

There is certainly a lot of good information in this book, but it's just not presented as effectively as it could be. Dr. Jensen is trying hard to present precise scientific information in generally understandable layman's terms, but she doesn't get either quite right. She is trying hard to be both scientific and folksy, but some of her jargon is not adequately explained (especially when a previously discussed brain structure or function comes up again in later chapters) and sometimes her folksy tone makes it difficult to accept her scientific viewpoint.

In addition, a lot of her presentation of studies relies on correlational studies without addressing the issue of causation. For instance, she'll talk about brain abnormalities found in teens who smoke, drink or use illegal drugs with the implication that the drugs caused the abnormality. But there also needs to be a discussion of the possibility that brain abnormalities may be likely to lead teens to such behavior - perhaps they are more prone to risk-taking or more responsive to rewards, or perhaps they are "self-medicating" to deal with the effects of their abnormalities.

Finally, Dr. Jensen seems to believe that teens need to be beaten over the head with alarmist messages about the dangers of the world. I agree that repetition is helpful for learning, but generally speaking, lack of information is not why kids get into the problems they do. Every kid by now knows that smoking causes lung cancer and that driving under the influence greatly increases the chance of serious collision. The problem, however, is that teens think that they are invincible. It can help to show them situations involving kids their own age, but such situations can also be traumatizing and paradoxically increase the likelihood of the behavior. Seeing a mangled car that was involved in a DUI accident, for instance, can lead to a variety of emotional responses including excitation. There are no easy answers, of course, but keeping the lines of communication open is vital. Beating kids over the head too much can lead them to tune out and shut down.

There have been a spate of books lately on brain development and what it means for raising children and adolescents. In my view, this is one of the weaker of those books. For a better view of the brain science side of the equation I recommend Laurence Steinberg's AGE OF OPPORTUNITY (although I part company with him too on a lot of his applications of what we've learned about teenage brain development). And although it's aimed more at parents of younger kids rather than teenagers, for the child-rearing angle I recommend Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson's NO DRAMA DISCIPLINE. The important take-away of that book is how children's and teen's brains are wired to respond to perceived stress and threats, including that posed by how we as parents interact with our kids when we get angry and punitive. And for a very thorough look at how stress affects all human systems, including the brain, I recommend Robert Zapolsky's WHY ZEBRAS DON'T GET ULCERS. The more we learn about brain development and functioning over the life course, the more we seem to realize that stress is one of the prime determinants in whether people thrive or fail. As parents, including parents of teens, the best gifts we can give our children are a safe and secure environment and the tools to manage and rebound from stress and trauma when they do occur.

A Neuronal Guide to Understanding your Teen

Excellent book that offers impactful information on both the psychology and physiology of the teen brain. It's easy enough to read for those without a medical background and offers plenty of science to engage those with a neuroscience background. Quick read. A soon as I'm finished reading, I'm passing it on to my almost 15 year old daughter in hopes that she'll recognize herself in the examples and maybe think twice as she encounters tricky teen situations over the next several years.

This is an illuminating and easy to follow read for both the scholar and layperson. I used it in my Lifespan Development graduate psychology course because it makes brain development and anatomy easy to understand. As a mom to a 14 year-old, this book makes a lot of practical sense, too. Well written and pleasant to read, I really can't put it down.

Sloppy print quality

I've been a commodities trader for many years but I've never owned a book by Gann so I bought this to use more as a reference than a first time read. I'm very familiar with many of his concepts but wanted to get them first hand instead of "Gann said..." which I know more often than not is used as a false come-on to lure you to the commentator's product - including software.
That said, I'm rating the book on the quality of the printed product and not on Gann's trading. I purchased this book new directly from Amazon. Beginning with the Gann charts on page 329 there are five of them that are completely unreadable because the crosshatch on the chart along with its comments are mostly blank. It is a production problem. The five charts simply didn't reproduce on the page. They are blotchy or in some cases almost blank. The printing quality isn't limited to the charts. Some of the textual pages are lighter than others and some are heavy black, obviously a problem with the printer.
I'm not exchanging the book because there is no guarantee that the next one will be any better and you know good and well they're not going to thumb through the book before shipping it out.
C'mon Amazon - at the price you're getting for this product you can do better.

The trading rules are what adds value

Well, there are great things about that book but don't let the amount of pages fool you. Most of the book is historical records of specific commodities and the as they are somewhat useful the real value is Gann's trading rules sprinkled in the pages.

Very good

I like this book. It does not promise "90% accurate signals" or treat reader with condescension. It teaches three things: 1) "swing trading" methods, 2) how to pay attention, 3) never forget stop loss orders.

The book itself is structured in three large parts: 1) W.D. Gann's approach to markets and trader's discipline, 2) examples of trading patterns from various commodities all the way from 19th century, 3) addendum from 1951 with some more details and clarifications.

Some people complain that Gann's writing style is too monotonous and droning. It is true in the sense that he does not entertain. But he does cover more ground than all those easy-reading "Trading for Dummies" book which are typeset in triple space with large charts.

Parts of this book and interpretations of Gann's methods are available on the web - but it is still nice to have it as a book.
